Diabetes, gluten and schizophrenia linked

According to diabetes news, researchers are convinced that foods rich in gluten could help to trigger episodes of schizophrenia amongst those prone to the condition. The team were researching the role of gluten in both schizophrenia and diabetes, as well as the links between the two conditions.

Gluten is an extremely common form of protein, found in many types of food including cereal grains used to make bread and pasta. The research team, from the UHI in Inverness, claimed that many sufferers could not handle gluten and this resulted in healthy tissue being destroyed.

The head of the UHI department of diabetes and cardiovascular science, Professor Ian Megson, reportedly commented: "This research is at an early stage, but if the theory is correct and those at risk are identified very early in life, a simple change in diet might prevent these diseases developing in some individuals."
