According to a presentation in India, diabetes has become the fourth largest cause of death from disease throughout the world. Furthermore, the disease is flourishing in India and has risen to become the leading cause of blindness .
The presentation was part of a Medical Education Programme about diabetic eye disease . It was organized by the Varanasi Eye Bank Society. By the year 2025, experts say, one in every five Indians could have diabetes.
Dr. Sunil Sah was reported as commenting: "Diabetes affects eyes and people with family history of the disease need to be extra careful." The world has around 250 million patients with diabetes . By 2025, this number could grow to as much as 380 million.
