New Zealand based biotechnology company Living Cell Technologies has claimed radical improvements in human trials of a new diabetes treatment. The company will launch a super high-tech pig breeding facility as early as next month.
The new facility, which will be based in Invercargill, will house around 50 pigs at the cost of $2.5 million. The founder of the company, David Collinson, reportedly said about the facility: "It's completely barrier-controlled so it means every part of it is designed not to let anything in and to keep out all the germs, and also to keep the pigs happy inside."
This type of cell treatment is making headway in some countries around the world. According to the medical director, a recent trial in Russia has benefited all diabetic patients, with two off insulin .
The treatment uses insulin-producing cells from pigs and coats the cells in a specially purified seaweed gel to prevent rejection. Cost per treatment is estimated at $100,000.
