Taking vitamins after doing exercise could undo some of the positive chemical changes in the body, according to recent research. German scientists have pointed out that antioxidant vitamins may undo good effects, and that ‘free radicals’ could even help to protect against diabetes .
Vitamins are thought to lower oxidative stress caused by free radicals. But the new research indicates that these radicals could have a positive effect on the body. They may work to increase insulin sensitivity, something that is lost amongst many people with diabetes .
A lecturer in exercise biochemistry at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at University of Birmingham reportedly commented: "It doesn't mean that antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E are bad for us, it just means that sometimes we need to consider whether taking supplements is actually beneficial. As this study shows it is not actually always the case."
