A team of diabetes researchers in Europe have discovered a molecule that makes obese people develop diabetes . It is quite common for people who are overweight or obese to develop insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes .
The new study highlighted a particular molecule, the CXCL5, which is produced by some cells in fatty tissue. For many years, obesity has been directly related to diabetes.
Lluis Fajas, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the Institute of Health and Medical Research, reportedly commented: "Chronic inflammation of the adipose tissue, which is characteristic of obese people, is a crucial stage in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes."
The research has been published in leading journal Cell Metabolism .
