According to international diabetes news, the strategy for treating and preventing diabetes amongst First Nations populations is not effective. There is a need to further tax junk food and encourage exercise, and to create a specific healthcare service run for and by aboriginal people.
The Canadian story indicates that the diabetes management approach in Ottawa is not really working. According to some experts, aboriginal health is actually in a state of decline. The diabetes epidemic strongly affects First Nations people in Canada.
According to reports from the region, various factors exacerbate the genetic proneness to diabetes amongst these people. These include poor quality of food and high levels of unemployment. A lack of recreation facilities and poverty were also mentioned. The diabetes population has doubled in Canada in the last decade to over two million.
