According to a team of researchers in the US, diabetes drugs used to control diabetes do not lower inflammation associated with heart disease . The study, the experts said, reinforced the need to accurately control diet and exercise .
Dr. Pradham of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, reportedly commented: "At the time we initiated the trial, we were thinking if we treat the diabetes, we will lower inflammation. This study suggests that lowering glucose alone does not impact one important risk factor for heart disease, and that is inflammation."
The team studied 500 people with type 2 diabetes, all of whom were obese . The aim was to see if metformin, insulin or a combination of the two could lower inflammation. The researchers concluded that diabetics needed to exercise and eat a healthy diet, and not rely on drugs to offset heart disease risks.
