Drinking a moderate amount could lower diabetes risk

Fri, 30 Apr 2010
Adults who drink moderately may have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who drink nothing at all, although this has nothing to do with a generally healthier lifestyle lead by those that drink moderately.

Moderate drinking and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes development have been associated, but whether this is down to the alcohol remains to be seen. Compared with non-drinkers and heavy drinkers, moderate drinkers usually had a healthier way of life.

A research team from the Netherlands studied 35,265 adults to reach their conclusion. Moderate drinkers were found to have a 35 per cent lower risk of diabetes . However, people should not use the research as an excuse to drink more.
