According to an official report by the Department of Health, lifestyle diseases are on the increase even as traditional killers such as cancer and heart disease become less common. Lifestyle illnesses include liver disease and type 2 diabetes, both of which may be affected by binge drinking and obesity respectively.
Deaths from cancer and circulatory diseases are falling, however, according to the annual Health Profile of England. England is thought to have the highest rate of obesity in Western Europe, a problem that could be contributing to the diabetes epidemic .
The study found that one in every four adults in England is now classed as obese . Over 2.6 million people are thought to have diabetes in the UK, which can lead to amputation and blindness and a number of other diabetes complications .
