According to diabetes news, the diabetes drug Metformin could help to prevent lung cancer . The drug is widely used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes . It is thought that as well as circulating insulin, the diabetes drug could inhibit the growth of tumours .
A senior investigator in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute, Phillip A. Dennis, reportedly commented: "This well tolerated, FDA-approved diabetes drug was able to prevent tobacco-carcinogen induced lung tumors."
To reach their conclusion, the experts treated mice with Metformin for 13 weeks, after exposing them to a carcinogen found in tobacco. The diabetes drug was found to be well tolerated and reduce tumour burden by 40 to 50 per cent. When administered by injection, the response was even more profound.
