Although health amongst the people of Northern Ireland has been improving in the last decade, obesity and diabetes rates have also climbed. The rise in the number of overweight people, and the corresponding risk of type 2 diabetes development, could damage the health services, experts warned.
The number of deaths from cancer, stroke and heart disease have all been reduced by healthcare advances, but diabetes rates are rising fast and the disease costs the health service over 1 million pounds per day.
The figures reported on the Health Service in Northern Ireland from a study that examined health outcomes over the last ten or twenty years. The Department of Health claimed to be focusing on developing education and self-management programmes to address the rise in diabetes . However, Diabetes UK Northern Ireland reported that just 15-20% of patients with diabetes are getting this material.
