Soft drinks sweetened with sugar have been strongly associated with an increase in new cases of diabetes and heart disease. The incidence of people drinking soft, sport and fruit drinks everyday has soared in the last decade. The research was presented at the American Heart Association annual conference.
Between 1990 and 2000, the report argued, soft drinks contributed to 130,000 new diabetes cases, 14,000 coronary heart disease cases and 50,000 extra years being burdened by coronary heart disease.
University of California expert Dr. Litsa Lambrakos reportedly said: "We can demonstrate an association between daily consumption of sugared beverages and diabetes risk . We can then translate this information into estimates of the current diabetes and cardiovascular disease that can be attributed to the rise in consumption of these drinks."
