A research team in Italy has found strong links between juvenile diabetes and a virus that is commonly thought of as mild. The new discovery could provide clues as to what triggers type 1 diabetes .
Researcher Antiono Toniolo of the University of Insubria, Varese, Italy, found that some 80 per cent of those children with juvenile diabetes surveyed had enterovirus infection in their bloodstream.
Toniolo reportedly commented: "Infection by different enteroviruses may be linked to the early stages of diabetes . These data do not provide a causal relationship between enterovirus infections and diabetes . However, the high prevalence of enteroviral genome sequences in newly diagnosed type-1 diabetes cases indicate that different enterovirus types represent a significant biomarker of early stage juvenile diabetes."
