Diabetics guide to safe travelling this Christmas

Christmas is the perfect time to get away for a short break. Whether it is a week in the warmth, or just a couple of days off to somewhere unusual, taking time out to relax can be exactly what you need to recharge yourself and face the New Year revitalised. As a diabetic, planning your holiday carefully can lead to a smoother journey, peace of mind and a relaxing time all round. There are many ways in which a diabetic traveller can make their trip safe.

Insurance is essential for all travellers, but particularly for diabetics. Several companies offer specific travel insurance for diabetic people. Making sure your cover is up to date and suitable for your holiday can save both time and money. Make sure you inform your insurance company of your condition and also make sure that you are covered for emergency transport home and the recovery of medical costs for insulin and equipment.

Being aware of what equipment you need, how the climate in the country you are going to affects your medication, and knowing what to do in case of a holiday illness are all part of planning for a holiday.

Making sure you have extra medication with you is a good idea. That way, even in an emergency, you are covered. Taking a Travel Folder with you can save time and confusion. If you are in an emergency, medical staff will then know exactly how to treat you. A folder should include personal information, doctor’s contact details, your medical history and medication, and any allergies you might have. Wearing a medical bracelet is also worthwhile: you can then instantly be identified as a diabetic. Notify both your airline and your hotel: taking your medical equipment through customs could prove difficult otherwise. The airline could also possibly provide you with a diabetic meal.

A Christmas holiday should be all about taking time out and not worrying. Following the tips above should leave you with no hassles other than wondering where to go and what to do. Enjoy yourselves!
