DIRECT diabetes project
The Peninsula Foundation has a particular interest in funding diabetes research by running the DIRECT diabetes project.
This is a community fundraising initiative that supports diabetes researchers at the College and patient support at the MacLeod Diabetes and Endocrine Centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
The Peninsula Foundation’s DIRECT diabetes project provided nearly £100,000 worth of funding for diabetes research in 2009/2010.
This money was raised locally for the benefit of the local community.
With this money the researchers were able to search for new genetic causes of diabetes, help educate nurses and healthcare professionals about diabetes, and ultimately improve the lives of those living with diabetes.
Current studies include funding the development of a new urine test, which can measure if an individual is producing their own insulin, removing the need for blood tests. As well as funding a novel online facility to assist junior doctors in their training of diabetes healthcare.
The Peninsula Foundation is located in the South West of England, the DIRECT diabetes project is based in Exeter. We are a local charity within Devon but we hope to improve the lives of all those living with diabetes through funding essential research.
