Postby kencharlton » October 1st, 2012, 4:32 pm

- Hi My Name is Ken , I am joining this forum as my daughter of 13 was diagnosed with T1 Diabetes December 7th 2011
I am 55 yrs old born and bred in England, living in Northumberland , Guyzance , near Alnwick.
3words before 7/12/11 would be happy adventurous and occasionally stupid.
Post 7/12/11 , Disillusioned, scared and down right angry.
My wife used to say I was an awful person to have an argument with as I just did not argue , but now I snap at the smallest issue , I’m not too happy about that but I cant help it .

Pets yes we have a cat ( 20 yrs old ) 6 Ducks and many tropical fish. Bane of my life cleaning out the duck shed , poo poo and more poo , good for the finger nails I hear ( tried to inject a smiley but failed there too ).
I like all sports as does my daughter she achieved a first Dan Black belt in Karate at the age of 10 , it as taken until last week for her to gain the confidence to go back to training , something to be happy about I suppose , As for Computers I cant see the attraction of Apple it is not easy to use and in my experience is a pain in the a**e .
Music I like heavy rock , not that I get the chance to listen to it , too much little mix and Pink , just noise I hear my dad say . Which is exactly what he would say when I watched all the syfy programmes one after the other .
I work as a Technical Project Manager for Fujitsu UK, I good company to work for especially when you are asking for days off to go to the hospital with the little un.
My Quals , ONC,HNC & BSc Degree in electrical and electronic engineering , plus a few Industry quals and Member of BCS ( British Computer Society )

I have joined this forum for "Hope" really , I have offered my Pancras as a transplant but apparently it does not work . I saw a report on this forum when I was searching for T1 cures , where a Chinese Doc had cured mice totally and wondered if this was confirmed and if any euro companies were chasing a solution .
My underlying thoughts are that this is a multi million dollar business for the suppliers , so they don’t really want a cure , or am I being too cynical?
:D :D

Re: Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Postby RichardCurtis » October 2nd, 2012, 12:07 am

I had been a long serving member of the armed forces, a mountain leader, an experienced long distance hiker, a vegetarian, non-drinker, non-smoker with no family history of diabetes. I was diagnosed Type2 immediately after Christmas 2007 !! Happy New Year.... It's one hell of a steep learning curve, isn't it? Oodles of misconceptions, misinformation. Then the absolute horror of advancing years and worsening management of it. Helplessness, the feeling of being poisoned by what you eat, slipping into sense of isolation and purposelessness. I felt like I was packing my bags at 50 !!
Finally, about two weeks back and after my banging on about it to (unsympathetic) GPs, I've been prescribed insulin. Immediate re-empowerment, better more effective therapy, relief from muscle pain, circulatory complications, overarching fatigue and the psychological side effects. I wish it hadn't taken so long to get here, but I am just so grateful to my DSN, the doctor who listened for more than the statutory 5 minutes and Bayer chemicals for the kit.
I've learned to take responsibility for what I eat, how much I exercise, and how I feel in my head. That's when I turned my own corner and stopped kidding myself that it wasn't going to affect me, I was the exception. None of us is exceptional, so knuckle down, be prepared to self-examine lifestyle, habits etc and DO something positive to change yourself. You're too valuable as a human being to your families, friends and this planet to succumb to this condition.

Re: HELP!!!!!

Postby Hollierose » October 2nd, 2012, 8:26 pm

Hi my name is Dee and I am very confused and would be grateful for any help whatsoever. I have just turned 54 (although it is said that I neither look it or act it, I agree with the bit about not acting it).
I currently have an overactive thyroid and am waiting for an appointment to have radio iodine treatment. I have been classed as pre-diabetic for the past 3 years following blood tests and Glucose tolerance testings. Just before the symptoms of my overactive thyroid started in August of this year I was experiencing the symptoms of diabetes (weeing a lot, very tired, dry mouth, drinking a lot, dizziness, bad memory etc). The results of my subsequent blood tests showed that I was still apparently pre-diabetic and that my thyroid was overactive. The nurse told me that we should get my throid sorted before dealing with the diabetes. I am on medication for my thyroid which includes a drug to help with the shaking. Last week I attended the hospital for my thyroid and whilst there experienced my third "funny turn" in the space of 1 week - I shake badly, I get a headache, my mouth becomes really dry and my vision is not good (although not blurred) and I become very dizzy and confused. The consultant checked my previous blood test on the computer and asked me what my GP had put me on for my diabetes. He wasn't pleased when I told him that I was still being treated as a pre-diabetic and not on medication and he immediately put me on Metformin 500mg twice a day. Today I had to attend the diabetic clinc at my GP's and they are still saying that I am only pre-diabetic and do not have Diabetes but that I should stay on the Metformin and even gave me another prescription. The nurse told me that my last 2 blood tests showed a level of 47 (can't remeber what she said - mg's or someting) and only when they have a reading of 48 on 2 tests will I be classed as diabetic. I had no advice about diet or how to manage this and I feel very angry and confused.
I would be grateful for any advice or helpful comments. I am sorry that this is so long but I feel that it is all relevant.

Hi fellow diabetics my name is Sue (short for Susan ) but no one calls me that since my mum died .I live in Southern Spain so some of the details eg glucose readings and medication names could be different.
I teach line dancing which is good exercise as I have to learn the dances first which takes up quite a lot of my time and energy.
I love reading especially murder mysteries, if there are bodies in the first few pages then its going to be my sort of book.
I live with my husband of 18 years and we moved to Spain to get away from the cold English weather but go back to the uk quite often to see the family.
I was diagnosed 14 years ago with type 2 and was on avandamet and then actos which were both taken off the market for side effect reasons, avandamet for heart problems and actos for bowel cancer. They have both been banned here in Spain so I tried Metformin and combinations with other drugs but they made me feel so sick all the time that I finally went on to insulin. I use the preloaded pens and life has become so much better and it does not bother me that I have to inject 5 times a day.
So thats my story, if you want any more information or just a chat I will try and answer you and work out what I have to do with the forum.
Bye for now,
Sue
