Alcohol douses the blood pressure benefit of red wine

Postby Cowboyjim » September 14th, 2012, 7:00 am

They found that men with diabetes or three or more CV risk factors who were randomly allocated to consume 272mL of traditional red wine each day in addition to their normal diet for 4 weeks experienced a small reduction in systolic and diastolic BP (2.3 and 1.0 mmHg reductions, respectively).

Saw this article in the Daily Mail the other day and have just received an order of de-alcoholised wine via an internet shop. Prefer taste of full wine but hubbie likes it as he likes drinking Pom juice (pomegranate). I think it tastes as if the wine is stale and no body - he thought it tasted sweet, I thought sour like vinegar but if it does you good ..... Thought I might use it up by mixing with full wine as the alcohol is meant to lower BGs and that's what it's all about.

De-alcholised wine eh? I'd have to mix mine 50/50 with Vodka/Whisky !
Also I can vouch for red wine levelling out the BP, I drink red wine in varying amounts every day and BP's vary between 100-135 systolic and 65-85 diastolic. If my GP asks how much I drink I just say ' enough '.

See my problem is I can't stop as 275 ml of wine, once the bottle is open I have to keep going!! Right now I am trying abstinence, I have my blood tests etc at the end of the month so I will see what effect all this new low carbing and abstinence will have on my BP.
Eat you your meter !!

Not sure exactly, but I think the drink driving law is going to change and alcohol in the blood will not be tolerated at all so even a 275ml glass of red wine may not be very good if you plan to drive the next day.

Far better for people to buy Reseratrol capsules and get all the benefit that red wine gives in a capsule that doesnt have any alcohol in it if you plan to drive or if you have respect for your liver.....

I drink two 150ml glasses of wine most evenings with my evening meal, not because it lowers my blood pressure or my blood glucose levels but because I enjoy it.

Would I eat or drink something I didnt enjoy because it might be good for me? No.

Alcohol-free red wine Is more effective at lowering blood pressure (BP) than traditional red wine or gin, a study shows.

Gin is not highlighted as much as red wine on this study. There are not many blends of Gin yet plenty varieties of Red Wine.
Sounds to me that this study relates mainly to alcohol abuse.

I think a glass of Red Wine of good choice with a meal or to relax will not harm. :D

Any way the Mail has got to put something in the news ( this was published a few years ago ).

I went on the wagon the other day

The worst 10 minutes of my life !

Question:- If alcohol is processed by the liver first what becomes of any carbohydrat/sugars etc that you consume at the same time ?
Do they just hang around till the alcohol has been processed. It might be a simple question but then I'm simple too !

re the "wagon".... we have buses like that in our town.... never again... shake, rattle and roll... and you have to pay!

I often ponder on the workings of the digestive system and whether you can "fool" it... I suspect it is all basically chemical reactions and the easiest will work through first, the rest circulates and gets processed at a slower rate as and when. Presumably all food moves through the intestine and is processed or not and then.... well, you know the rest.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a TV doc about how a sandwich, for ex, got digested.... simple informative stuff... but not likely in this dimension I suspect. It would have celebrity americans in it at exotic locations, false tension every ten minutes for ad breaks, distracting graphics and terrible music but... But I would watch it if someone like Tom Baker read the script over a Powerpoint presentation and still be rivetted.... and informed. Those days are long gone... 8)
