Hi
Because the weather has gone colder, my wife made a potato hash (with dumplings) in the slow cooker today. Lovely...So nice, in fact, that the large, full, dinner-plate I was given soon disappeared and I went for 'seconds', including two extra dumplings.
I only had a half slice of white bread, though...
Three hours later, I thought I would just test my Bg...
The result, 10.1....OOps!
The first 'double' figure reading for several months.
Maybe I shouldn't have had that bread!
I'm booked in for an HbA1c test on Thursday, the first one since April, so I'm hoping that it will show a lower average, despite tonights' reading...
Fortunately, I don't feel any different, whatever the reading...

I'll be round at yours with my own dinner plate and knife and fork! It sounds wonderful! It sounds like the bread was to blame!

I think you were lucky to get away with 10.1, Malc! Potatoes, well cooked so very easy to digest; white flour in the dumplings, probably - and then that half-slice of bread - I hate to think where I would have been with all that lot! You may well have eaten your full 150g carb allowance for the day in that one meal!
I think the key behind this is - potato hash or dumplings, but not both together
I hope it doesn't affect your HbA1c - and I'm so glad you enjoyed it

. Just don't make a habit of it!

I am utterly surprised you only went as high as 10.1 with all that high carb food
AND 2nds . I now have to ask have you actually grasped what being diabetic means and how your daily diet needs to change?? .. bread, spuds, dumplings and then a 2nd plateful ..sheeesh! My flabber is well and truly gasted

After 3hrs, your BG would be on the downward slope of the spike. I know mine would SHOOT up if I at potatoe hash OR dumplings.
If I were you - I'de keep that meal off the menu. At the very least, cut down the portion size and make up your plate with some broccoli...

Hi, its all too easy to reach for the heart warming comfort food these colder autumn days...
I have been making homemade casseroles too, I just leave out the potatoes, onion's [give me jip!] root vegs, the starchy carbs. Use peas, mushrooms,sweetcorn, tons of tomatoes, chardonnay carrots [few only] sweet orange baby peppers, bacon lardons or chicken cubed up , veg stock, tomato puree, creme fraiche .
Keep them as healthy and low carb as I can.
One bowl of this is enough to warm me and my hubby up, as you say malc it could be the portion you had TWICE !!!

plus the bread AND dumplings !!!

I had a similar meal in the "early days" of my diabetes, but without the bread and without the seconds - my BS was 13.1!
You're a lucky guy!
By the way, in case anyone is confused, this fellow dumpling lover isn't the "Malc" I was before my re-birth as Grazer!

Well, many thanks for your replies & advice...It may appear that I'm not taking my diabetes seriously, however, last nights' meal wasn't a typical example of my recent eating habits...
Looking back on the meal, I suppose that I should have adjusted the portion size on my plate and added broccolli, as suggested here, but I do find it hard to resist my wifes' dumplings...
My comment about the bread was, I confess, a little light-hearted, but prior to being diagnosed, I would have probably had 2 full slices...So I was making an effort...
My Bg reading (fasting) early this morning was 5.7 so I'm close to my 'normal' range...

I think we were all only teasing, Malc - and I for one did confuse you with Grazer - sorry to both!

I must admit that it didn't sound right for Grazer.
Anyway, I think you'll have got the picture about our opinions!

. It's a shame - I too love dumplings, made with self-raising flour and suet, seasoned and with a pinch of mixed herbs, then floated on top of the casserole in the oven with the lid off, so they go all crispy on top! Sigh!
Maybe I'll have a nice casserole over Christmas sometime, and see what dumplings do to me. No potatoes, though.
Referring to Anna29's post, I'm eating my way through a huge ratatouille at the moment. So far it's been with sausages, beef and pork on different nights. I've cut up a garlic sausage into it for tonight. A friend recommended a couple of handfuls of red split lentils as a thickener, and they don't seem to touch my BGs at all - useful.
It is definitely casserole weather - it was -3 at 08:00 today.

No need to apologise.
I welcome any replies to my posts, even if those replies appear to be somewhat critical of my opinions, I still appreciate other peoples' comments & experiences... I'm still learning and, occasionally, I'm likely to over indulge, both with the portion size and the carb content...
I sometimes try to inject a little humour into my posts, although I do realise that the subject matter is a serious one... I hope that no-one here is offended by my approach...
I hadn't realised that 'Grazer' had previously been a 'Malc'...

Ah Malc, your fasting level was in the 5s, so no damage done, relax, dont be too hard on yourself.
I myself, as everyone already knows, am a low carber so no potatoes for me, however my diabetic friend who is closer to following low GI, swears by using Vivaldi potatoes, these have around 28 carbs less than ordinary potatoes, so it might be worth looking out for that.
As for dumplings, MMMMmmmmMMMM, me loves dumplings, suet, etc is good, but oh yeah, the flour, so go and replace the flour with almond flour instead, it works.
I have also made some dumplings with ground flaxseed in it, no need to miss out and even if you are not very low carbing you can save a few carbs for something else by making these slight adjustments.
Viviennem can I pop over for dinner please, love ratatouille, have a look in the low carb recipe section, I have posted a couple of liver recipes there.

) got a recipe for those dumpings, Whitbyjet? I'd quite like to give 'em a go...
I made Fauxtatoe Dauphinoise at the wekend using Celeriac. It was AWESOME!!! Loved every mouthful!
I bet we could de-carb your wifes Potatoe Hash recipe - post it up and let's have a bash at it...

Ok here is a link for one version of dumplings

100 g (4 oz) almond flour
1/2tsp baking powder
50 g (2 oz) Suet
1 x 2.5 ml spoon (½ tsp) salt
cold water to mix
dried herbs
mix together to form as soft dough, shape dumplings, then place on top of stew or casserole, cover and simmer for 20minutes, and DONT lift the lid while they are cooking.
I have also tried the same recipe replacing the almond flour with finely ground flaxseed, it was ok too.
Dont worry about the almond flour you wont end up with marzipan dumplings, the almonds flour is pretty bland and good for sweet or savoury dishes.
Sorry Patch, 'need I ask', I know I do tend to have an answer for just about everything and if I havent then I go looking till I found it. I dont want to be overpowering though with my recipes and suggestions, I am basically a porker, love my food and enthusiastic when I find something that really works, so I come to the forum to share. When I think back to the early days, how desolate and boring, just salads and meat and meat and salads...,,
Nah a good casserole or stew with dumplings on top, all low carb, leaves you the carb allowance for a pint of lager to go with it.
