Hi newby, it is all a bit overwhelming and confusing in the first few months. If they are not scaring you with possible complications, its blinding you with numbers!
Your GP will sort out the Hbac1 test - it usually consists of a urine and blood test and an annual eye test. When I was disagnosed I was initially put on 3 month checks which then dropped down to once every six months and then once a year.
I was like you when diagnosed, cut everything bad out and worried about everything I ate and my sugars. I don't test every day as I am no longer on medication which gives me hypos. I go by my blood test results, the most recent was 7.1. My doc was very happy with this, although it has been lower in the past.
Its very easy for me to say, but I think its about finding the right balance between living well and being healthy. I would echo what others have said about researching different ways of eating to help your diabetes and testing them out. I have gone from a GI approach - little and often, low sugar, low fat - to the swedish diet which is low carb/high fat. It is about what works for you.
Hope this helps and good luck.
All the best
Jane

Jayney, the 6.5 was great. Your earlier high of 9 would almost certainly be down to the mash - worst way to have potatoes I find as it releases the starches. A couple of small boiled NEW potatos are better. The tests you do measure your blood sugars at the time. The HbA1C looks at the average of your sugars over the previous few months. The test will be done at the doctors or a clinic at a hospital. It's a simple blood test. They'll probably check your cholesterol at the same time. Just keep checking how different foods affect you 2 hours after eating and cutting out the bad ones. Your doing great with readings at 6.5!

Type 2, diagnosed Nov 2010. HbA1c then 8.2%. Mar 2011, HbA1c 5.9%.Dec. 2011 5.9%. May 2012 5.7%

As diabetics our bodies dont really like carbs, and although what youve ate seems healthy just check out the carbs in your yougurt, ryvitas and you fruit and fibre breakfast. ( it should be no more than 5grms of carbs per 100 grams) Also some of us cant eat much fruit, so that could be affecting your BG levels. like volorg I'm now on a LCHF diet, and it really is working for me, but none of us or exactly the same, it really is trial and error for the first few months, and if you can test, test, test,

Diet coke shouldn't raise your BG. It's got zero carbs.

2 shreaded wheat and an apple.
2 Shreaded Wheat = 40g of Carbs
2 cups of semi-skimmed milk = 20g of carbs
1 medium apple = 25g of carbs
85g of carbs in a single meal would probably spike most T2s. That's more that I eat in a day...
You are doing the right thing by testing, now you know that shreaded wheat are probably not for you.

Hi,
Depending on the size of the apple the carbs will vary.
http://www.diabetesnet.com/food-diabete ... -challengeThe shredded wheat are quite carby too. I think an average portion is getting on for 40g.
There is nothing to offset the amount of carbs in your meal like some protein or some good fats to slow down the digestion so the carbs will be absorbed quickly. The whole meal is high in carbs.
What you also have to bear in mind is that whilst these foods may spike you, they may be perfectly alright for someone else. If there was a blueprint then we could all eat the same things and it would be so easy.

You need to keep a food diary and try and see a pattern emerging when you eat so that you can eliminate or have smaller portions of the things that cause a spike and make sure that your meals are balanced.

Another thing; what was your BG BEFORE you ate? Was it already high before, in which case the RISE in sugar may not have been too much. In the early days, it helps to test just before you eat as well as 2 hours after to see the difference.
