Help… Using serendipity I have figured out that all women with the “hunter” gene get gestational diabetes. The “hunter” gene was defined by a weight loss doctor (low carb diet) on the Public Broadcasting System in the U.S. as people who did not lose weight on his diet. He explained that such people had a glucose tolerance test where their blood sugar increased for over 2 hours (diagnosed as prediabetic). I have figured out that “hunter” gene people’s A1C is strongly correlated to the amount of sugar/starch/alcohol they have eaten (diagnosed as prediabetic). I have 2 questions I want answered. Are all women who are not diabetic but get gestational diabetes “hunter” gene women? What fraction of the people diagnosed as prediabetic are simply people with the “hunter” gene?

The following may be helpful. I have controlled my reactive hypoglycemia with a low carb diet for over 12 years. If anything, the diet has helped my health.

Could you say more on this 'Hunter gene'? Was it actually identified by the Human Genome Project or by a non geneticist?
My knowledge of Diabetes (of any type) is in its infancy but increasingly I read that the condition is not fully understood as per cause of the differing types or, indeed, treatment options. TIA.

This has been covered by quite a number of threads from the op.

He was told by a so called specialist that his RH is genetic.
I don't believe so!

On a lighter note, I have heard that women eating weetabix when pregnant will cause gestational diabetes!

But I don't have the time or energy to protest!

Hi

A doctor on television (I meet his wife in passing but do not know his name) said he tested his weight loss method on a group of people. About 1/10 of them did not lose weight on his diet. His wife who I meet in passing says he uses an Atkins style diet (also now called low carb). He made a big point that they must have been lying but he had a moment of genious he looked at their glucose tolerance tests and saw that their blood sugar continued to rise, although it slowed its assent, for the 2 hours of the test. Since we can live on a hunter gather diet, he named the people with my gene as having a "hunter" gene. I have a guess that the gene involved may be one that was recently found in mice where a mutation of the gene lead to unexplained weight gain. I guess that we are in the minority in most populations because women can not turn off the hormones which make them insulin resistant without turning off the hormones produced by the placenta to make the baby insulin resistant.

Well now you gone an done it.:banghead:
Hi

What is your problem? I can look up the name of the gene found in mice. I have asked anyone I could think of what about humans. The reply is that it is not studdied we do not know exactly what the gene does. I can give you the name of the hormones in the placenta which create insulin resistance for the baby. Do you want it? I have asked my best expert could these hormones be produced elsewhere in the body and we do not know about it. His answer was silence, which I took as yes. Many people throughout the world have read my web site (not allowed to give name) and 3 women have emailed me (annoynomously) Thanks. Why no one emails me I do not know. I think 2 of the women were from this site and the other one is in India. My gene is very prevelent in India. It is very good for times of food scarcity. They must have had many failed monsons in India.

Hi

Late reactive hypoglycemia is usually the hypoglycemia of "hunter" gene people (me). It took me 50 years to go against the medical advice and start my low carb diet. It has taken years for me to start to be nearly normal (fatigue). I have not heard 1 case of gestational diabetes which does not fit my "hunter" gene hypothesis (waiting). In case you don't get it people with the "hunter" gene are usually producing hormones which produce insulin resistance. The placenta is also producing these hormones. In normal times the women stops the hormones when her blood sugar starts to get to high. Then she produces some insulin but checks to see if she is still too insulin resistant (boy the body is wonderful) when her body gives the all clear she produces enough insulin to sop up the sugar. All humans put out the hormones sometime during the insulin release to prevent too low blood sugar. People with reactive hypoglycemia do not start the hormones. The hormones are also produced (started in the "hunter" case) in a sugar emergency. If you eat enough sugar to raise your blood sugar enough to stop the hormones but not so much that the body determines it has to wait until the hormones have cleared you will get your major insulin reaction while you are still slightly insulin resistant. In that case you will not restart the hormones. The body doesn't like that and tries to start the hormones. For me the body is finally successful but I end up with major fatigue. When the "hunter" gene women are pregnant they can't stop the hormones without stopping the hormones for the baby. If the baby was not insulin resistant it will die so the women becomes diabetic as the hormones continue to be produced.

HI

What is vlchf? I have to eat my low carb diet because I had an autoimmune reaction in 1957 and do not restart my hormones (we produce hormones which produce insulin resistance most of the time) when my bodies blood sugar gets too high I stop the hormones. I am supposed to restart the hormones during the insulin release. I don't and I either have an emergency start of the release when I get very low sugar or if I have my release while I am still somewhat insulin resistant I get tired as my body struggles to restart the hormones. In my (web site, not allowed to give name) I point out that if my theories are correct (so far all my feedback from medical professionals is awe, no, it is obvious, if you think as long as I have) is that all type 2 diabetics can control their diabetes with diet (that means you). I also point out that 1 person with my type of reactive hypoglycemia eats a slowly digesting starch and feels fine. Further the American Indians who have the symptoms of "hunter" ate an orignal corn which was hard to digest.

Is there really just a single "hunter" gene? I'd guess there's more than one. I'd also guess that almost all humans have it. Is there any population that would not do well on an all meat diet? I don't think so.

In the sense I have used the "hunter" gene there is only one. It is a different way of processing sugar. 1 of the attributes of this method is that you do not lose weight on a low carb diet. So you do not starve if you eat a standard hunter gather diet. The way it works is if you eat a low carb diet you have an insulin releases to process protein. You need insulin to prevent a build up of ammonia in the blood (you can die from that). After insulin processing you pea most of the result. However once the insulin is in the blood it also changes sugar into fat. I speculate that all humans have the ability to produce the hormones used in the placenta to make babies insulin resistant and to prevent very low blood sugar you release these hormones when necessary. "Normal" people probably produce these hormones but in any case their blood sugar becomes lower than the body is comfortable with. So the liver changes fat into sugar. Changing sugar into fat and then changing fat into sugar is very energy intensive. I have read that up to 1/3 the energy is lost in this process. So you lose weight. People with my gene are usually insulin resistant. We are producing the necessary hormones most of the time. We do not change sugar into fat

Hi
My diet is mostly meat with some low carb vegetables and some nuts and some 100% coco for a treat (almost nothing else). I have eaten this diet for over 12 years. My health if anything has improved. So if you have the "hunter" gene the hunter gather diet seems to be fine. I can explain why you do not lose weight if you care.
