I see from other posts on this excellent forum, that it is ''advisable, but not necessary'' to change lancets after each self test......if not changing every time, will it still give a true reading ?..........Del.

I change mine about once a month, it doesn't make any difference to the readings, I know you're cutting down on carbs and well done for that but both the porridge and biscuits are high in carbs, maybe eggs and bacon for breakfast?

Thanks for that......going to ask the question tomorrow.......perhaps having such a high reading might influence their decision......although from what I am reading on here I am not very hopeful........Del.
Hi Del80,, When I was diagnosed in Jan this year my BG reading was 19.3 was put on metformin 500mg straight away, 1 daily second week increased to 2 daily. with lots of willpower and diet smaller portion sizes, now got the readings down to single figures, also lost 8lbs in weight. Go see your doctor and ask him .:doctor::doctor:

That's good to know, well done,.......going to make an appointment in the morning, although that could take a couple of weeks, may try and see diabetic nurse first, she can issue prescriptions.........Del.

Porridge is a funny one. Some can eat it with no adverse effects, other's can't (including me). I have to avoid cereals altogether as they send my levels into orbit, even though I have soya milk.

Luckily I have never liked cereals, I did eat them when I was a kid, but that was an awful long time ago.......I do, or did, however, drink a lot of milk, semi-skimmed, which I have now replaced with pints of water, except for a small amount in tea and coffee......only got one strip left, so waiting until morning to test.........Del.

I too use soya milk for my tea and alpro unsweetened for my cerial first thing in a morning , I asked the diabetic team about not having cerial as was very carbyand they said it was a must otherwise would mess up all my diabetic medication

Many diabetic nurses trot out this rubbish about carby foods being essential (for a multitude of reasons) and it's just not true. Current studies are showing that this advice is outdated, bordering on dangerous unfortunately. It's also the reason so many struggle to have bg levels that are in single figures. Big portions of carb are Not necessary for anyone.

Been to book an appointment with diabetic nurse this morning........can't see her for two weeks, I could have seen another member of ''the team'', but they just tell you what they are told to say, so with it going down nicely have decided to wait.......hopefully by then it will be down to single figures.........Del.

This can't be right........just tested, meter reading says 23.4 mm ol/L......what does this mean please ?
That is an extremely high reading, speak to your diabetic specialist and tell them your reading, what did you eat before that reading?

Went out for breakfast about 3 hours ago........sausage bap.....round of toast....mug of tea with no sugar.......just tested....26.6........not good......now going to have an orange, and test again in about an hour......Del..
Sausage bap, will boost your sugars, toast will boost your sugars, and with a high of 26.6 avoid all fruits till you get your blood sugars under control, with all these highs, you need to learn what foods you can eat and what foods you cant eat, sounds like you're eating all the wrong things, and if you keep eating the way you're eating you will end up with complications, this forum is the best place for you, please take into consideration the food that you eat as you do not want the complications!!

Well done Del and congratulations on beginning the journey of taking control of your diabetes. I'm sure you can see how measuring your BG can focus your attention on what needs to be done and show you the impact of diet particularly carbs on your blood sugar and how you can impact that quite quickly. Did you tell the nurse when making the appointment the high readings you have had? Two weeks seems a long time? Did I read that you were out of strips? You should try to buy some more until you can find out if they will prescribe some as with your current levels you really need to keep on top of this until you get your appointment. I'm sure some posters on here can let you know where the cheapest are available in pommy land. Keep off the carbs
