I'm not doing that great on Metformin at all. I started with the standard one, 1 weekly then increasing to 2 weekly. I was meant to increase it until I got up to 2x500mg twice daily, I never made it to that.. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea too much. Gp then switched me to the SR Metformin and within 4 days of taking it the same thing. So now he wants me to take Glixicide?? but warned me that I could experience hypo/s on this.. I really don't want to take it, as I'm a bit of a worrier all the time, I would probably be sleeping and thinking I'm having one! He also says they have to provide me with a meter and strips when on this medication.. I haven't started taking it as yet, as I'm due my next HBA1c in a few weeks and wanted to see if my change in diet etc has affected the results.. As you will see from my signature, mine was a bit on the high side so I am hoping for a miracle
Hi just_undiscovered_ I have been on 2 metformin 500mg for a few weeks but still having a few tummy pains and aches I have decided to go ask doctor for the SR ones, see if it makes a change.

Hello @amgrundy - Agree, why suffer when then is other tablets that you can go on. A lot of people don't take to Metformin - I must say the only side effect I get with Metformin is constipation - and I take 4 x 500mg a day of the stuff. Enjoy your day:) William.

Hi @liam1955, yes I have bought myself a meter and have been testing before and 2hrs after meals since early January, so am hoping for an improvement in results. So far, I think my readings have been ok, minus a few blips but it seems to have been more about the portion of the food rather than the food itself. Am learning as I go along

Hi @just_undiscovered_ Try and do 'smaller' portion sizes. And we are allowed a blip now and then! :) William.

Hi liam1955 Yes you are right I am not suffering anymore I think if it was going to settle down it would have by now. I also have slight constipation with it too. Enjoy your day too, will let you know what the doctor says.:)

@Wayne36 - So you are OK with the Metformin, because a lot of people get tummy upsets and/or diarrhoea, constipation? If this should be the case with you? - Don't suffer, it can be changed to a slow release version of Metformin. If you have any questions? Just ask and someone will come along and answer. Keep doing what you are doing.

Hi the diarrhoea has started i haven't disgraced myself yet as the toilet is only 10 ft away i've come close though lol, but the diabetic nurse phoned to say she's giving me another tablet not sure what one i'll update you, also she's decided i need a meter to check my B/G originally saying i don't need to, she was instructed by the diabetic specialist though so seems she was just trying to save money lol

@Wayne36 - Sorry to hear about the diarrhoea, the sooner it stops the better! That's good your tablet is changing - it could be slow release Metformin? - which is better for your stomach and should not give you the "runs"! So, when you get your meter have a good read and set it up. (Owning a meter is a vital piece of equipment for Diabetes ) - a lot of people buy their own now that the NHS is making "cut backs"!!! Let me know when you get the new tablet and meter. Thanks. :)William.

Hi i have a doctors appointment at 3 i pick them up then, i'm still going to be taking the metformin they're just adding another tablet on top of that :dead:, i will talk to the dr about it. I did buy a cheap meter i got 10 strips and lancits with it they've been used so i'm glad i'm getting a new meter with more strips i think it's only until i see the dietician nurse so she can monitor my blood. They'd probably save money in the long run if they gave people meters and helped them sort their B/G levels out and get back to normal again. I'm not an expert it just seems logical lol.

@Wayne36 - Hi:). There's a lot of Newly diagnosed Diabetic people and they are not given much (if any) information. Yes, it is a big shock to find out you have Diabetes - but, it is not the end of the world! You cannot think it's going to get better with time = it won't. There is too much information to take in at first, so take one day at a time. The first piece of essential diabetic equipment is a METER to get to know your blood sugars, because this is what it is all about - keeping those numbers within range (or lower). You should be back soon? I am back on the forum now until meal time - about 5 pm' ish. By the way my name is William:).

Hi nice to meet you william, i got my new meter (not used it yet) and i've been given Gliclazide 40mg to take twice daily before meals with the metformin 500mg also twice daily, it was showing as an abnormality on my liver the doctor said it was slighty above normal (40) mine was 43 but she want's me to have an ultrasound just to be sure . I'm actually pretty calm about it, i know it's not a nice thing to be diagnosed with but it's given me a kick up the backside and made me look at what i'm eating and doing to my body, i'm eating as few carbs as possible so hopefully i can lose some weight and get a bit more active as well as getting my hba1c back to normal :)

@Wayne36 - And guess what I am going for this Friday? Yes, I am having a Fibroscan done!!! I would take the tablets WITH your meals or half way through. Gliclazide - was on that years ago, and I put on over a stone in weight. When you have set up your meter - May I suggest that you test your blood sugar before you eat and then 2 hours after eating. I keep a food diary = write down what I ate, my b.s. result before and b.s. 2 hours later, by doing this you can see what foods gives you "spikes". And test first thing on a morning so you can see what your fasting blood sugar is. And you should always wash your hands before you test! Have to go now - but will be back on forum later, after I've eaten.:) William.

Were you on the same dosage of Gliclazide i've been prescribed i want to lose weight not put it on lol, i was told to take the Gliclazide 30 mins before i eat and the metformin after i eat, i've been testing my blood sugar before and after meals a couple of times but my test strips and lancets were limited i've got 50 test strips and 100 lancets now so can do it properly. Hope your Fibroscan goes well :)

@Wayne36 - I was on 80mg Gliclazide twice a day, but had been taken off Metformin that was 5 or 6 years ago. I have had Type 2 for almost 16 years (in May) - I take 40 Units of Insulin every morning, plus 2 x 500mg of Metformin at breakfast and then around now I take 2 x 500mg of Metformin and 1 x 5mg of Dapagliflozin (another diabetic tablet). There is a section on this forum about various diets, go to the top of the page and tap on Forums, then scroll down to the heading FOOD and NUTRITION - there you will see headings for: Low Carb Diets, Low Calorie Diets, Weight Loss and so on. These might be of interest to you? If I can be of any help? Just ask? And post questions on the forum - there's lots of friendly people on here. :) William.

Hi William I see what you mean about washing hands before testing, I forgot to wash them and my blood was 7.4 so I washed my hands and did it again and it came up 6.5 I hope that's because I washed my hands a not bad meter reading hehe :joyful:
