There were several posts about eating pickled vegetables yesterday further up this thread - which is why I experimented today. If you look further up today's posts I've posted a sort of diary about what happened today and updated it on all my BG readings and food. :)

Ok thanks i'll take a look

I had a protein roll from lidl with light chedder cheese and sweet pickle i used low fat mayonnaise instead of margerine, before my reading was 6.8 after it was 6.1 not sure why it went down :)
@Wayne36 I'm wondering if the protein roll is a bit like celery. You use calories to eat it.
Celery gives you minus calories but protein roll won't but I find them a task to chew but I still enjoy nevertheless. :)

I'm not really sure how well the pickled veg experiment worked out - my FBG was 6.9 this morning. I've been doing some googling about vinegar and diabetes and it seems there is evidence that apple cider vinegar taken before bed can lower FBG - so I'm going to give that a try tonight. I'll let you know if it works.

Today I'm fasting, so
Breakfast and Lunch: Just black decaff, redbush tea and lots and lots of water.

Dinner: Small home made lamb burgers (meatball size) with Moroccan spices. A side dish of griddled halloumi and pickled cherry peppers and pickled garlic cloves (to carry on the pickled theme). A fake couscous made with grated cauliflower sauteed in olive oil (and plenty of garlic) then finished with a little grated lemon zest, fresh chopped herbs, a few slivers of toasted almonds and some toasted cumin and fennel seeds and a little very finely chopped chilli and finely chopped yellow pepper. And, probably, a dollop of spiced up full fat Greek yoghurt. Yes, I know its not really authentic but its yummy and low carb!

Hi i had granola with dried fruits and semi skimmed milk for breakfast my B/G went from 7.8 to 14.9 was a bit shocked how high it went but i forgot to look at the sugar content 16g per serving so that'll be going in the bin, think i'll go on to porridge or some burgen soya and linseed bread toast.

It's not just the sugar. Granola will be high in Carbohydrate, probably 70g or more per 100g, which will ALL turn into glucose in your body, as will the lactose in the milk, and the sugar in the dried fruits. Can't think of a much worse Breakfast for a T2D.

Porridge won't help much either as that will be 60g or so Carb per 100g and all that Carb will eventually turn into glucose.

I've read porridge is good for lowering sugar levels it has good carbohydrates which are high in soluble fibres, i can only try it and test for myself and see :watching:

@Wayne36 There is no such thing as a "good" Carbohydrate mate IMHO.

All Carbs turn into Glucose in your blood stream, albeit at different rates depending on how complex they are.

This is the Low Carb Diet forum, for posters who want to eat Low Carb to control their diabetes, and seek ideas and alternatives. There is another thread on the Type 2 sub forum, Called "Type 2 what have you eaten today" which is used by posters who don't take the Low Carb approach, and you may find more useful to you for ideas of what to eat to control your disease.

How does the chocolate digestive affect your BG? If it's just a little tiny rise then maybe you don't need to cut it out. Worth testing for.

hi Chook, thanks for your reply - to be honest I haven't been testing my blood sugars for quite a while which I realise is remiss of me - I've just relied on the HbA1C. You've reminded me that I was going to get out a meter I was given quite some time ago to see if its still working. I guess if I do that, it will really help with motivation to get my diet right.

You might find (if it's been stored for a long while) that the strips are out of date and the battery might be flat. Using out of date strips can give some REALLY weird results also its worth investing in some new ones.

I hope you find out you can carry on with your choccie biscuit - life is so much nicer with the occasional little indulgence.

Thanks Chook - I've just come off the phone from the doctor's surgery and have got a telephone consultation for Monday to talk about getting a new meter and test strips.

I can't find the thread about tea but I have been having trouble sleeping and had some chamomile tea before bed and woke up with about a 15 point lower fasting. Just thought I would share .

I am taking the low carb approach, i'm only quoting what i read, i post it and find out information from other people that's how i learn. it's all new to me, i've got an appointment with the specialist dietitian on the 26th so should find out loads of good information then, blood levels are in a good range so all is fine there. Thank you for the advice though :)

My advice FWIW would be to remove virtually all carbs. If you keep trying to see which you can eat without a large impact on your BG, you'll end up going around in circles and your levels won't improve hugely. I would (and did) go very low carb for a while, see the results in lower BG levels, and when you reach a stage where your levels are non-diabetic constantly you can start to experiment by adding a small amount back into your diet and testing the response.

Just my experience.
