Type1.Why am I losing so much weight?

I exercise daily to keep fit but don't need to lose weight because that's exactly where it's supposed to be, however, I am dropping weight like there's no tomorrow with very little effort it has to be said, just a couple hundred press ups and crunches and a run around the lake each morning which is only about a mile.

What gives?

I read that your BGs were 16.5 one day. Maybe if you kept a tighter control on them and adjusted your insulin to bring them down then you wouldn't lose so much?

As a T2 I know that it's too much insulin in my blood that makes me fatter. I also know that many T1s lose weight before diagnosis, so whilst your figures aren't in the DKA range yet I feel that lowering them would stop the weight loss maybe? I wouldn't lose weight with that amount of exercise, in fact I would probably gain.

Time to see your GP? I hope you can get this sorted anyway as it seems to be becoming a real problem to you. Good luck mist :)

yes you are a very special case Mist..

when one has a very high blood glucose, one can in some cases not burn and use glucose and then burns fat if one is in kind of acidosis, and then the body scwitches to burning only fat (and maybe muscles as well) ......and the glucose remains in the blood and urine

maybe if you got your BG levels down to normal levels you could have your body act normal and maybe both gain weight and musclemass..
I have noticed you very ofhen have a high BG, I don´t know at what point excactly the body starts eating itself from the muscle side... maybe you have despite of being lean a very high insuline resistance and... maybe metformin could help you a bit... but I think it is dangerous to eat carbs for you. and stay as high as you do.. ... and would be so happy to see you with normal levels of blood glucose...

you have really been through hard times and disease... maybe that has changed something in your body...I think you should aks for really to be send to an specialist... maybe even one that helps eating disorders even by not really having an eating disorder... because you need a specialist to help you...
maybe I am wrong Mist so please not be angry with me... I really wan´t you to become more in control and get healthier..
you are such a sweet and funny person and have a lot of energy it seems to me.... maybe people that have been in chemotherapy have a changed metabolism. ....

Hi Mist,

I'll stick my neck out & suggest the higher BS levels you profess to have aren't helping..
Combined with your past medical history? I would suggest a full MOT at the docs to cover all bases..

I'll tag in a couple of insulin using fitnes types that may help. @Daibell @TorqPenderloin

mist there are a lot of supportive people expressing their concerns. I have wanted to prompt you into action for a while. You need medical help as soon as possible.

I agree that the weight loss may be attributable to something other than diabetes. I posted this before but a couple of years ago I lost about 1 stone in weight and this was due to a hyperactive thyroid, another autoimmune disease.

Please please contact the surgery on Monday and report back!

Thanks guys, I don't think the chemotherapy had much of an effect on me in any long term negative way, but I'm almost certain that the radiation treatment did, that stuff is brutal and I started developing a lot of health problems soon after that treatment.

I hear a lot of problems can be associated to the thyroid, either over active or under active. Perhaps this is something I need to get checked.

I don't have a doctor at the moment because they kicked me out because i cancelled two appointments due to being agoraphobic and having a particularly bad time on those days I couldn't attend.

I'm trying to get into a new doctors surgery but as of right now, no luck.

I do inject quite a lot of insulin but the levels just won't come down, maybe I am resistant to it?

I don't know, it's kind of strange. I don't feel unwell or anything, no loss of energy or anything like that.

I'll try my best to get to see a doctor somehow.

When did you last see your doctor? I would contact your former surgery and explain your circumstances. Maybe they could make a home visit. Or ring 111 or do you have a local health community unit?

yes maybe you are insuline resistant.. that would explain the whole picture... unfortunately metformin only helps a bit , but I tried not to take it for only 1.5 day and my morning level was actually raised by 0.6mmol from 5.9 to 6.5 next day.. that is a high difference in percentage so if it could help you as well... I still think you should see a specialist instead of an ordinary GP because they are so ignorant and some would even claim that a thin person could not be insuline resistant..
and also that insuline resistance is purely a type 2 thing.

Freema mist is not in London and these are private endocrinologists anyway. mist's first step is to see the GP who will then refer him to an endocrinologist on the NHS.

It is technically possible for Type 1s to develop Type 2..

High blood sugars will cause weight loss, but if yours have been high for a while but the weight issue is only recent, then it would be a good idea to visit the doctor for some general tests for things like thyroid problems or coeliac disease.

This sounds obvious, but if you have a fast metabolism and are unknowingly eating a bit less than usual each day, then you can lose weight quite quickly (speaking as someone with a fast metabolism : D )

Another thought, are you still in touch with the cancer/other units? They might be able to refer you an endocrinologist. My diabetolgist referred me to an endocrinologist for the thyroid problem. (Both guys are in the same unit!)

I recently changed my diet a bit to include less carbs after reading on here that it helps. I've dropped 11 pounds in five days which seems extreme to me as I don't really have any excess body fat to begin with.

No, I've been in remission for a long time now so have no contact with the cancer team.
