Am I type 1?

Hi everyone,

In December '13 I went to hospital over the weekend with classic diabetes symptoms of weight loss, thirst etc.

I had a blood sugar of 26 and was put on Novamix 30 that day. because it was the weekend, there was no diabetic specialist available and so I was advised to go to my GP on the Monday to set up the relevant appointments.

Within a couple of weeks I had been put on MDI using Lantus and Novarapid. initially I was on 14 units of lantus and a 1:5 bolus to carb ratio.

Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, the DSN said they no longer needed to see me and I have adjusted my insulin to just 2 units of Lanutus but 1 unit of novorapid to 10g carbs. Through low carbing and exercise, I have managed to maintain a HbA1c of 6 or just below

I revently moved to a new area and booked in at my new GP surgery for an assessment with the DSN. She was amazed that I was only on 2 units of Lantus and arranged for me to see the GP who specialises in diabetes.

He was very suprised that I am on so little background insulin despite the fact I have a more typical bolus ratio. I asked if it could just be the honeymoon period and he thinks not. He phoned an Endocrinologist and is sending me for a c peptide test, abtibody test and a few others. He mentioned LADA diabetes and MODY despite me having no family history of diabetes.

He said that potentially this would change my treatment and could bring me off insulin. I'm not convinced and think I'm just having an extended honeymoon partly due to good control.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Am i Type 1?I guess I wont know until I get my blood redults. At any rate I doubt my treatment will change drastically.

I was diagnosed about 16 months ago and I am on humalin M3 twice a day. I take 4iu morning and 6iu evening. Working as a vet I have 8Kg dogs on a lot more than this lol
The honeymoon period can be variable but I am also shocked how long things have gone on. You have every right to be curious that's for sure. Did they initially test you for antibodies against your pancreas?

Hi Dazza,

No I've never had anything other than full blood count, cholesterol and HbA1c. Not long after diagnosis I more or less got left to my own devices until I registered at my current GP.

You should have had this test done...

I would discuss it with your clinicians. This will tell you if your immune system is basically attacking your insulin producing cells. I find, from chatting to others, that there is a great variability in level of care between certain NHS trusts. Mine is brilliant and very supportive; cannot fault them. They are always on the end of the phone if I need them etc.
Don't forget tho, you have all of us to chat to :)

I'm only on 2 units of background insulin (levimir) a day and just 0.5 units for every 10g carbs so I too am on v little. I was told because of the amount of exercise I day and my job being so active (gym instructor/sports therapist) that that is the reason why I'm on such little amounts alongside being suspected to still be in the honeymoon period :)
