Hi everyone I have just started on a lchf regime to get me out of a burnout. Is it normal to have a headache and feel really tired at first. Today I have eaten 2 boiled eggs and had a cup of tea. Last night for dinner I had an omelette with ham, quorn, peppers, onions and toms.

Getting old and everything that goes with it. All the repeats on TV. The drongos who ring me up to sell me things. Religious havens for pedophiles and war-mongers.
err I don't know what a burn out is but I know what a boiled egg is. Methinks tho you plan should be expanded before you embark on it.

burnout is where you eat what you want regardless of the consequences (only just found this out)

Yes it's quite common i think they call it carb flu, you should feel better in a couple of days, remember to keep well hydrated and drink plenty of water, well done in getting back on the wagon :)

I thought that was a blow out, different country, different meanings.

I am not qualified to give advice I can only tell you what I do and why I do it.

On Docs advice I went on no major carbs I got off insulin onto tabs lost my raging hunger and lost weight and fixed my blood test issues. With no change in serving sizes.

Now we are having fun chasing up recipes and we are on a great new food adventure trail - I can even eat chocolate cake etc etc but only if it is lo-carb.

I see no reason to punish myself with serving sizes or boring food.

My advice is if it is not fun then find another way..

Start with this delicious chocolate cake.
  • Chocolate lovers can enjoy low carb desserts, too! If chocolate is your thing, you can make a low carb, three-minute chocolate cake. In a large glass measuring cup, mix together ¼ cup almond flour, one tablespoon cocoa, ¼ teaspoon baking powder, three tablespoons Splenda, two tablespoons melted butter, one tablespoon water, and one egg. Cover the measuring cup with plastic wrap, cut a small slit in it, and microwave on high for one to two minutes or until the cake looks set but still moist. If you enjoyed this, try out our other low carb cake options or our advice on low carb brownies!
We cook it in a soup dish without the plastic wrap and it comes out fine.

Your food choices are great so far. What you are experiencing is normal, but will soon pass.

Lchf is a great way to manage diabetes, but there can be side effects to begin with. I found that I had a lot of carb cravings to begin with, and yes I did suffer with headaches and lethargy as well. Also, drink loads of water. Your body takes time to realise it can live on fat and protein without carbs. At first it will panic, thinking it's starving. It will therefore release a lot of its glycogen stores, which will also make you lose a lot of water. You may also find getting cramp becomes a lot more of a problem. Upping your salt intake can alleviate this (obviously don't eat 12 tablespoons of salt, but a bit more than usual will probably be necessary).
These side effects lasted around a month for me, but it varies a lot between different people.

thanks I have been getting cramp on and off all day today. Feel better after having some lunch with a nice lump of cheese and some full fat mayonnaise. Have also been 'losing water' alot hopefully can stick to it and start losing weight again, especially the stone ive put on since xmas.

Hi Hun, if you're on Facebook I follow a group called low carb eaters, they post some lovely recipes! I google things too, that cake recipe someone posted earlier is great I have it often with clotted cream and feels like I'm being really naughty eating it but has so little carbs! :) xx

Thanks for the support MssA
I think the way to go is slow and steady weight loss not rapid, I lost I lost 6KG in the first 3 weeks and felt terrible for quite a while after that. And then my weight loss tapered off but I am still losing with out serving size control, but I have lost my raging hunger from the insulin. No headaches tho.

I was tickled pink with my initial weight loss but in retrospect it was the worst thing I did.

It has been an interesting journey for me because it is the first "diet"I have been on in my 70 years other than choosing low GI over regular.

So my weight object now is to #1 Do not put it back on #2 Lose some more and slow is better than fast, I have another 10kg to go then I my specialist says I should increase carbs because I can tolerate more carbs.

Phase 1 for me was rapid weight loss without major carbs] + extra veg (feeling crook)
Phase 2 was probably eating a bit more with without major carbs +extra veg (feeling a bit ordinary)
Phase 3 was less hungry and stabilizing slow and steady weight loss (feeling really good)
Phase 4 is enthusiastically becoming a gourmet cook chasing down and adapting recipes and using appliances to make it easy and sustainable.

So far it has been 14 weeks starting at 106 KG and now 92 KG on my ordinary bathroom scales.and I expect the next kg to take 4 weeks.

I suggest I have done everything OK except the initial weight loss was too fast. There is no rush if you are starting a new lifestyle that is sustainable forever. Make it fun and not a misery is my advice.

Remember too that on a low carb diet, you need to eat extra fat for the energy you used to get from the carbs you're now avoiding, and If you're getting cramps you may need to replenish your potassium levels as well as salt.

thanks everyone. Am actually feeling good this morning. My scales are already showing a 3-5lb loss (not sure how acurate they are though). I weigh in at the moment at around 21st 5lbs which is quite a lot. Im aiming to be 20st by the time I go back to work in september. Thanks @claymic for saying about the almond flour being same as ground almonds because i was going to buy some today but at nearly £5 a bag in tesco it was going to be a luxury ground almonds are so much cheaper. @Mrsass I am defo going to look up that group on facebook. I'm beginning to feel in control again.

Glad your feeling positive :) if there is something you really fancy I google a low carb version like 'low carb shepherds pie' for example and see how you can change the recipe, sometimes it's really obvious but I've been surprised at the things suggested :) xx

Hello Caroline,
How is it all going? I do not mean the weight loss that will happen, and it is best not to focus on it.

My question is what is your diversionary tactics? I think diversionary tactics need to be full-on something new and something that takes extreme mental attention. Here are 2 examples.

By chance, my first few weeks of my new LC lifestyle coincided with learning to play the Ukulele. And before I knew it my first lc week had gone,

It was a bit of an experiment because I have no music ability and I do not sing or dance. I can now play a few chords and amuse myself but I have not gone "public". There are stacks of cheat's ways to play the little 4 stringed guitar on the net.

Try ventriloquism, I did and I failed but I had some fun giving it a go.

You can see my avatar is a ventriloquist dummy. I made Tad Trendy but I am the world's worst ventriloquist in fact if you search youtube you will find a few videos I made. When I made these videos I had given up trying not to move my lips but we had fun making the videos. My wife hated the videos but she likes Tad Trendy and he sits in a chair and watches TV with us, but he is very quiet these days.

Anyway trying to be a vent is something anyone can have a go at, it is an old fashioned entertainment, and everything old is new again.

So Caroline, how are you travelling and what are your diversionary tactics?

Here is my youtube link https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8J1bvejRdsAtG_Lh8JwERQ

youtube would be another diversion you could try. I found the program for making vids on my computer and I used the video on my small pocket camera.

You can make a vid. on anything, there is even a video on the net on how to peel a banana.

Art is good too if you do not do an art try doing the exercises in the popular book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" here is my online gallery http://www.paintingsilove.com/artist/colgriffin
