Too much information

Getting old and everything that goes with it. All the repeats on TV. The drongos who ring me up to sell me things. Religious havens for pedophiles and war-mongers.
When I look at the depth of detail and assumptions made in these forums I wonder if punters are working with too much information or are they working with not enough information

Obviously, we do not want to be like the dog chasing its tail (using too much info getting nowhere) and we ultimately want long term good health.

In the UK the med. advisers are saying long term good health is dependent on a balanced diet.

My old specialist was the same.

My new specialist says short term no major carbs is good, but when my weight reduces enough, and my resistance reduces I should add more carbs.

Has my new specialist got it right or wrong?

BTW He speaks in general terms so he does not seem to think everyone is different (my observation is everyone likes to think they are different)

i think we are broadly similar but very intricate so there are many differences, as in why one person is alergic to peanuts the next to gluten, so although i agree that carbs are bad because they are sugar, i also think everyones tolerance levels will be different, but broadly speaking we would all do well to eat fresh real food, cut down on carbs and exercise more often, after that i think we get into the differences, too much info? i dont think so, i like to hear it all then try to decide which i think is right, this isnt always easy, statins in my case are a mystery, if it were simple enough that we were all the same there would be a set guideline (if you take out the money food people and drug people make swaying the argument)

Hello @Andy12345 thanks for your thoughful response.

I used to take Lipitor and you can check out the side affects here http://www.lipitor.com/side-effects. I ended up on a walking stick it took ages to recover from it.

Reducing carbs is not adding something like Lipitor or peanuts that our system might object to, reducing carbs is just reducing something we already have in our diet. (and probably too much anyway).

So in this case "being not much different" is independent - not associated with allergies.

Well said Andy, there is so much information out there on diet, in general and diabetes related. So much contradictory advice ... I read everything there is to read, avoid extremes, and intuitively do what works best for me. Most importantly, I need a diet that I can enjoy and live with. What is working for me presently is a diet containing 9 serves of fruit and veg a day (2 or 3 fruit),reduced carbs, moderate fat, unprocessed food. I have got my insulin back into the normal range and my aim is to keep it there and avoid diabetes. I've had the wakeup call and it's up to me what I do with it :)

The only thing we can do is find out what works for ourselves.

I've spent decades doing various versions of low carbs, with generally 'better' results - but nevertheless I my glucose tolerance slowly deteriorated, and here I am, type 2 now.

Ironically (and thanks to this forum) experiencing low carb discussion and exchange of ideas and advice for the first time, has meant that I've dropped my carbs even lower.

And now I feel great. Better than for years.

We are all so different. How can a medical professional possibly apply their generalised knowledge to me (or you, or anyone) and assume it is going to work? It will work for many, possibly most. It will probably work on 95% of people. But any individual may fall outside their parameters.

Every bell curve has the little sticky out bits at each side. It's just life.

Exactly ... we also have other conditions/diseases that can affect our BS levels. I've been doing random testing for my Endo and keep getting 'hypo' feelings after about 2 hours of eating and my GP tells me only diabetics on insulin get real hypo's. He also told me that it is well documented that some people get all the symptoms of a hypo even when the BG levels are ok. Today for lunch I experiemented with a large multigrain roll with swiss cheese, ham & salad plus a cup of vegetable soup. 90 mins later I felt awful, bad anxiety, lightheadedness .. decided I'd go for a walk with the dog to take my mind of it, came home and tested 2 hours after lunch ... BG 4.3 ..***? I was expecting high reading from the bread. The anxiety was so high I had to take half a valium! I have problems with anxiety but I feel fine til I get to the 2 hour mark after food so it's all a bit strange ... I have Addisons which I think is complicating matters to going to see my Endo late September ... assuming I'm not dead by then!!! :)

PS .. Now enjoying a bottle of Verve with Mr T .. it's Friday night so sod it!
