Fructosamine levels

Hi all,

Been a while since I posted. My wife is now 17w+4. She had her Fructosamine tested at week 15 and she got the results today and it was 450 which is very high. What's strange is that the vast majority of her blood sugars are within range or low, she hardly gets any highs. So far the consultant she sees and diabetes specialists have been really happy with the way my wife's sugars have been keeping.

She had an appointment with one of the consultants registrar today (level below consultant) and he was quite negative about the way my wife's blood sugars have been and has asked her to make loads of changes to her pump. She has been seeing the consultant every two weeks since week 6 and he has been really pleases about everything so I don't understand why the registrar today was so negative.

My wife is really worried now and I know worrying / being stressed during pregnancy is not good. Any advice around this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Vik

Hi vikc

I have never heard of this test being used in diabetic pregnancy, it isn't recommended by NICE.

If it's of any comfort, I looked it up on wiki (I know, I know, but it seemed a reasonable place to start!) and it seems it isn't very accurate.

In my 30 years of diabetes, I've never met a registrar who has seemed knowledgeable about diabetes either, they really are quite junior.

I'd go by your metre and hba1c!

Thanks Kt for your response.

My wife had a call from her diabetes mid-wife saying the registrar is new and not to worry about what he said / the Fructosamine levels. Felt better after your response and was good to hear from the midwife as well.

My wife's a nurse and she mentioned that sometime different trusts look at different measures. We are with Royal London hospital and they do look at hba1/c but apparently the Fructosamine levels give a short term indication of how thing have been over the past couple of weeks.

Really appreciate your response :)

You're very welcome, glad it helped a little. Happy to hear your wife is doing so well, I've only got 10 days left to go myself now, so fingers x'd for everyone! :)
