I have been type 1 for almost 20 years and this is my second pregnancy, I am only 6 +4 weeks. My first is now 3. We moved to Germany a couple of years ago, so I'm doing this pregnancy here. Diabetic care here seems a bit different to England. My question is, has anyone ever been told in pregnancy or otherwise that a sugar level of 3.9 is NOT low...? I' feeling quite frustrated as they want my levels to be 5...all the time...what about exercise? I feel like they want me to make diabetes my career. Any answers or info or other peoples experience of diabetic pregnancy would be greatly appreciated. Ria

Hi riab,

I am also pregnant with baby no 2 7+1. I also have a 3 year old. I have been told it's ok, good even to have a blood sugar of 3.9 but only before eating. I certainly couldn't function at that level any other time! Obviously it's important to keep levels as low as you can but you also need to be realistic and avoid hypos where possible. You certainly wouldn't be safe to drive at 3.9. I too find visiting the antenatal diabetes team like attending an interview. They just fire questions at you and don't seem to offer much support. Pregnancy and diabetes is tough!

There is a book on eBay called , pregnancy and pre existing diabetes. Should help. It's helped me. I'm 7 wks +5. I'm keeping my range between 5-6 but obviously taking more insulin. Going for a walk to helps regulate your glucose. Congratulations and I wish you the best xxx

Ok, so I thought it was just in Germany they have this strange idea of sugar levels! I feel low at 4.8..there is no way I could function at 3.9. I'm trying to make my body feel ok with these very low levels, but its tough. I never had anyone tell me that before, I think during my last pregnancy my specialist didn't bother because he knew it was unrealistic, so I got a bit of a shock hearing it this time! Do you exercise? How do you find that? Do you do anything special to avoid lows when exercising? I teach kids dance classes and I usually need my levels to be about 8 to have optimum energy and to avoid lows, but now I can't let them get that high, so don't know how to continue my job.

My diabetes team told me a 30 minute walk would regulate me. It works for me, I understand your frustration about having to keep your levels low. I feel awful at 4.8 and can't concentrate and want to sleep. As for he dancing lessons, I would advise you speak to your doctor or diabetes team. I can only advise but don't have the qualification to give out medical advice. I hope it all works out for you xx
