Hi Raymond,

Can't say for sure that they are linked -but I did read it somewhere I think many moons ago so can't remember where - sorry

I can give you my own expereince though - for about 3 years before diagnosis (I think I was diabetic for that time but undiagnosed) I had these on a regular basis and they were very sore - GP said it was pustular psorasis - but since diagnosed with D almost 2 years ago and getting my numbers in good control I haven't had a one! - so I think my doc was wrong and there is very likely a link (imho)

Hello Raymond. There is a definate relationship between the two. Ive been plagued by them over the years and as you can imagine, there is nothing that bacteria love more than the sebaceous oil that is produced naturaly in every one. Try adding sugar to equation and hey ho,,, germ heaven. You dont say what your control has been like, but i presume its not too good. Try to keep working on it hun and hopefully you will get on top of these awefull cysts. Good luck.

I suffer from these and my GP said it's fairly common for people with diabetes if their sugars aren't very well controlled.... mine aren't! I get them particularly in my groin area and they're extremely uncomfortable! Sometimes they get as big as golf balls in a big lump under the skin - horrid!

My GP was pretty clued up on it and I now phone for antibiotics as soon as I get a flare up.

It can get complicated when antibiotics aren't working but it helps to be able to get a swab of the fluid inside the cyst so they can give you specific antibiotics rather than a more general one. But the real problem comes when you keep getting them repeatedly and they begin to form tracts where they link up with each other - at that point you sometimes have to consider having them surgically removed. Getting antibiotics quickly is the best way to go for me!

I'm sorry you're suffering with this. It's not a nice or easy thing to deal with. Perhaps you might find it helpful to change to a GP who knows a bit more about diabetes care because my GP seemed to know it was fairly common for diabetics!

There is definitely a link, I have ok controlled levels, and have had about 4 of these all resulting in surgery, antibiotics dont even touch them, I am usually stressed, overtired or run down when they start. The last one which resulted in 4 days in hospital was after some drastic dentistry. The ddiabetic clinic have just said some people are more prone to infection!

I had these painful things under my armpits and in my groin. They stopped appearing when I stopped taking that particular concoction of meds.

Weird, I had a sebaceous cyst that kept growing but it was never infected and was never painful, but kept growing and had to be removed surgically.

Some of the descriptions above sound more like Hidradenitis Suppurativa to me?

I'd definitely be seeing a doctor if there's even a hint of infection involved.

I know that when my sugar gets above about 135 to140 I get more of them at the base of my scalp behind my neck. I also had one near a skin tag on my side.
My doctor told me there is a relation.
Lately I have been exercising and controlling my sugar and they have all disappeared. Hope this helps.

Hi Raymond 123,

Agree with Indy51, deffo sounds like hidradenitis supperativa (I've had this lovely condition for about 25 years now).

Might be an idea to ask for a referral to a dermatologist, they have started to treat hs with an antibiotic cocktail and seem to be getting pretty good results.

I was glad to find this topic discussed as I was wondering if there could be a link. I'm in my first (diagnosed) diabetic year and sugars not uncontrolled at HbA1c of 43, but had a broad bean size lump below my shoulder for months/years that suddenly became infected 2 weeks ago. Have had a course of antibiotics and the doctor basically said to let it surface and heal and they would operate to remove it a month or so later. At this point I have a scary-big open wound on my back that my husband is dressing daily. He reckons there will be nothing left to surgically remove by the time it heals - but I'll look as if I have been shot!

Hi All
I get cysts a lot, on my 7th now and recently two one after another. Hate them, yet now trying HiBiScrub (antimicrobial skin cleanser), to use after washing. This was prescribed by the Dr, so not sure how much of a difference this will make as not sure of what else to use as I usually get the surgically removed asap.

Had about 5 or 6 removed off my scalp since diabetic. I have been told they are related to diabetes but have 3 family members who also get them and they are not diabetic. So maybe a genetic element too

Hi. I frequently get sebaceous cysts on my scalp, so I am having a blood test on July 7th to see if I am diabetic. I haven't noticed any other symptoms, so keeping everything crossed that I am not. If I do have diabetes mellitus , will I have to inject myself with insulin? Thank you. x

Hi Ruby'smum, this thread is over 4 yrs old, it may be better to start a new one, you'll probably get more up to date replies. x
