Michael Gove and his insane educational? policies!
Can anyone advise whether it's ok to include drinks such as pepsi max, diet pepsi, diet lemonade on the LCHF diet? I tend to drink these more than any other but the contain sweeteners which the diet says to avoid. Are there any thirst quenching suitable alternatives? :) ;)
You need to stick with water and coffee with cream. Ideally avoid them. Although they don't contain sugar, they contain sweetener which kids your body into thinking that you've consumed sugar and therefore your body releases insulin. :(
Ideally avoid milk but cream is fine! I drink black tea and coffee.
Wine in moderation. Spirits with diet mixers.
If you search under Scandis recipes I have posted up some recipes which might be of interest to you.

Well I've started my new regime. Just eaten scrambled eggs with grated cheese on the top. I know it doesn't sound very creative but I enjoyed it and eggs are my favourite food in every shape and form. Just wish I could perfect my poached eggs! Anyway in exactly 2 weeks I will be flying over to the States for 2 weeks. My friend of 44 years lives there in a town called Montgomery which is in Texas. I'm pretty sure I will be faced with an abundance of carbs at every turn. Texans really do go in for huge portions. I will have been on my regime (and stuck to it) for 2 weeks by then. I would be devastated if I let myself falter so soon into the regime. It's going to be a stumbling block but I'm determined to rise to the challenge. Just keep that avatar picture of a year ago in my mind. I can do this! :)
Well done! Hope you made your scrambled eggs with double cream! :D Please keep posting and have a fab holiday! :)

Excellent. Tried and tested recipes will be very useful thanks
In all honesty I had no double cream but used full fat milk instead. I will be busy shopping today
At lunchtime yesterday I had sausage, bacon, fried egg, tomatoes and mushrooms. By teatime I found I was not in the slightest bit hungry but I knew I had to eat something. All I could manage were some cashew nuts and olives. I had no desire to eat during the evening. Still not hungry but a little anxious about having a hypo during the night, I ate some sandwich ham. My sugar readings stayed stable and in single figures I'm pleased to say. However when I went to sleep at midnight I felt a bit peculiar. My stomach was growling like mad even though I still didnt feel hungry. I was very restless and couldnt switch off. I felt lacking in something. I ended up having to have a slice of bread with thickly spread butter. This seemed to do the trick but I feel like somehow I have let myself down already
This morning I have an appointment with my diabetic nurse so lots of things to talk about

You'll be fine on your holiday. There will be lots of steering wheel sized steaks to help you out, no doubt. Just avoid the bread or fries accompanying them.

If, on holiday, you can't have your absolutely ideal food, don't beat yourself up. There'll probably be some decent compromises if you think hard enough. I know when the pancakes with maple syrup and bacon are being piled high, it can be hard not to just dig right in, but the bacon is usually of the streaky variety (good for LCHF), and personally, I can eat the odd waffle with no impact on my bloods. It's the stopping at one you might find tricky early on in your journey.

We all need to join in with society and have a social life, if that's what we enjoy. It's about taking it steadily enough to work out your personal compromises.

Finally, I do agree with the others who are amazed that with your portfolio of auto-immune disorders you haven't been referred for some specialised help. It's also really useful to get print outs of your blood results. Naturally, your doc won't tell you every single test he may have ordered from a blood collection, but having the results, and tracking them (I use a spreadsheet) is quite comforting, if you like the detail.

Good luck with it all.

Thank you for your sound advice which I have taken on board. Everything in moderation I guess. I will take my list of do's and don'ts with me to keep me on track. I'm not one for eating huge meals and I will probably get a few strange looks from the Texans!
I am seeing my gp tomorrow and I will definitely insist on a referral. I can't think of any reason why he shouldn't Fingers crossed

Halfway through day 2 of LCHF regime. Have so far stuck rigidly to it. No hunger pangs. Not even at lunchtime but got through some broth soup. Is it normal for me to feel soooo tired though? I understand my body is adjusting and first week is the worst though

Would normally use exercise bike this time of day but the way I'm feeling I would probably just rock myself to sleep!

You probably need to give your body a bit more time to adjust to the new diet. I understand that reduced energy and concentration are not unusual when drastically reducing carb intake, but that this is only temporary.

Next time try a piece of cheese. I also buy green and blacks 70% dark choccie and have 3 or 4 squares from 100g bar. If you take a square, break it in half and suck it whilst drinking a warm drink then it tastes great. Quite time consuming too so you don't want any more. Try and avoid the bread. I use garlic butter when I cook and sometimes cut myself a couple of shavings. Your taste buds change! I was always a cadburys dairy milk fan before and didn't care for dark choccie. Try and swap out cream for tea as milk as sugar in it.

I was definitely a diet drink junkie before AND cadbury's dairy milk so that's going to be a difficult one. Its strange getting my head round using cream instead of milk. How much dark chocolate am I allowed a day? Also is it all diet drinks that contain this no no sweetener?
