Firstly welcome to the diabetes forum. It might take a little time to get your head around all the things that you now need to know about how to control your diabetes and you're off to a flying start by reading through the questions and answers that are posted on this site.
Your Blood/Glucose readings are definitely far too high, both before eating and 2 hours later. Don't panic. take one stage at a time and learn how exercise and diet can help control your Type 2 diabetes.
A very good starting point is to consider changing your diet to the LCHF diet and you should search this site as there is some excellent advice on how to go about this.
If you have any problems or questions then please ask, we all want to help each other and much of the advice is from real diabetics who have 'been there already and done that'

All the best - Lazybones

Hello and welcome.

Yes, both readings are high, especially the post meal one. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to keep any post meal rise to under 2mmol/l. This will be difficult at first as you need to learn which foods you can and can't cope with. (we are all different in this), but you will soon see for yourself.. You have a meter, which is good. You also need to keep a food diary of what you eat and the portion sizes of the carbs in that meal. Record your levels alongside the food, and in a while you will see a pattern emerging. If the rise is much above 2mmol/l there is something in that meal that you need to avoid or cut the portions. These most likely will be potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, pastry and cereals.

You also need to learn to read all the nutrition labels on everything you buy. If it has a high total carb content, put it back on the shelf.

Have a good browse round, then come back and ask any questions you wish.

Hi and welcome.

No, those readings are not normal.

However, most of us on here have found that by making diet adjustments, we can make great strides in reducing our blood sugar levels.

Basically, if you had a meal that sent your blood glucose up by so much, then there was something (carbohydrates) in that meal which caused the rise.

I don't know what advice your doc gave you about diet, but did they mention that all carbs such as bread, rice, potato, pasta, sweet fruit, cereals, etc. turn to glucose in the blood - and that is what your meter is reading. It certainly doesn't have to be 'sugar' to send your readings up.

So, have a think about what you ate last night and see if you can work out what it was that had the bad effect.
Then, next time, either avoid that food, or have a smaller portion.
Keep testing, before food and 2 hours after, and you will quickly learn what foods are causing the problem.

Ideally, many of us try to aim for no more of a rise than 2.0 mmol/l with food. that is easier said than done, especially in the early days. but don't worry, you will get the hang of it. and as you do, you will slowly find that your pre-meal readings also drift downwards - and you will know you are on the right track.

Hope that helps!
And please feel free to ask any questions that you like. :)

Hello Nick and welcome to the forum :)

Here is the information we give to new members and I think you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you like and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 100,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Yup.
I'm afraid that anything above 48 is classed as diabetic, and means that blood glucose levels are too high - and may, over time, cause diabetic complications.
But if you act now, and take control of your diet, exercise and lifestyle, you may well be able to halt, or even reverse, the progression of the disease.

Welcome to the forum, by the way! :)

Thank you

No worries!
We all find the first few days, weeks and months very difficult. Coming to terms with it, and adjusting to the new way of life we have to start. And unfortunately, we don't always get the support we would like from our docs and nurses.

But you've come to this forum, so you are in a great place to pick up masses of info, hints and tips, and please, ask any questions you like.

You may find it best starting a thread of your own in the Newly Diagnosed section, just to introduce yourself, and start with the questions. If you like. :)

Can you say what you eat, in a typical day?

Sleeping so much can be caused by a number of things - including these
  • High blood glucose
  • Low thyroid
  • Vitamin deficiencies (vitD I think)
  • Depression
And there are others that I can't remember...

But if you look at food first, and adjust that, if necessary, then you (and your doc) can look at the others if that doesn't do it...
