Hi all .Finally had my appointment with the endocrinologist again this afternoon and have been told I have "metabolic syndrome" .I start on Insulin and Victoza with 100mg of Sitagliptin but thankfully my Metformin has been stopped . Found it quite interesting that the Wiki page for the syndrome states "

A 2003 study indicated cardiovascular exercise was therapeutic in approximately 31% of cases. The most probable benefit was to triglyceride levels, with 43% showing improvement; but fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance of 91% of test subjects did not improve.[11] Many other studies have supported the value of physical activity and dietary modifications to treat metabolic syndrome.

Restricting the overall dietary carbohydrate intake is more effective in reducing the most common symptoms of metabolic syndrome than the more commonly prescribed reduction in dietary fat intake.[49]

Since a great many type 2 diabetics would fall under that syndrome its good to see an acknowledgement that cutting carbs does have an effect !

I'm pleased you now have some sort of diagnosis, and wish you luck with your insulin and new meds.

Hi. Yes, good to see that. I would hope if you can keep the carbs down you may be able to stop the Victoza in a while, with the agreement of the endo. I assume you were on the plain Metformin not the SR (Slow release) version which is much kinder. Met SR does help reduce insulin resistance so is a good drug if you have excess weight.

Thank you Bluetit .I seem to have a clinical specialist who is determined to treat the high BP/Diabetes ,Cardio damage ect .It's good to have one doctor who can bring it all together and treat accordingly .He has written quite a lot of papers on obesity and Diabetes .Since it's a sort of non diagnosis that probably half the forum fall under .I was quite cheered to read the above about low carbs being more effective than low fat .:)

I was actually on the Metformin SR @Daibell but he feels it isn't helpful in this case .He likened it to sticking a band aid on a large open wound since my BG was too high to be effected by it much and it wouldn't alter the fact of my non production of insulin.

Hi. Sounds like you have a good endo. Yes, it makes little difference to blood sugar but does help if someone is overweight and insulin resistant. It didn't help me for the same reason as you and I'm on insulin. There was a web report last year which showed it made a slight difference even with insulin and my DN convinced me it was worth staying with for it's protective properties; of marginal value though.
