Hi Snowy and welcome.

One tip. Unless you have medical problems that prevent this, I would ditch the spreads and go back to butter, same with yogurt and mayonnaise. Eat the real thing. Most "light" products are crammed with sugar to make it taste nicer. Some are better than others. But don't look at the "of which sugars" bit. That is fairly meaningless for us diabetics. It is the Total Carbohydrates that you need to look at. (the sugars are included in this, and carbs are the culprits in raising blood sugar levels.)

Did your DN tell you to eat pasta? I expect so. pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, cereals and pastry are foods we have to be very careful with, whatever their colour.

Don't worry, you will soon get used to things. Baby steps.

Hi Snowy and welcome.
Glad you are trying diet before any meds and it realy works,I dont see it as a diet anymore just a new way of eating, and I feel much better for it,
Hi Patricia21 Thanks for the welcome yes have the meds in my bag so until my nurse or doctor says I have no choice then I will take them.I don't see it as a diet either I am just saying I am cutting out carbs and no sugar as I haven't told all the members of my family yet,but shall be doing that soon.

TBH I would take the metformin, it's a good drug for lots of things, once you get past the first couple of weeks, you can stop them later, when your BG is ok, but a lot choose to stay on them for the other benefits
as @Bluetit1802 said, you may need to reduce your carbs
these sites helped me

For me, the more carbs we eat the more carbs we want. they don’t give up easy.

I have taken Metformin since diagnosis in 2009 and continue to do so despite a non-diabetic latest hba1c of 5,2% (33 mmol) ; I am of course still diabetic.

I choose to do so as I consider that my current combination of medication/diet/exercise works for me so why fix something if it's not broken.
I am also aware that Metformin has beneficial effects that extend beyond glycemic control, as @jack412 mentioned.

This is my personal choice though and I fully understand why others such as yourself may wish to go down the diet and exercise only route.

Even with metformin, diet and exercise, are still the primary means of reducing glucose levels; metformin's estimated impact on Hba1c is estimated at about 1% reduction in score when expressed in the old percentage terms.

Metformin does not cause insulin secretion by the pancreas it has a twofold action, it reduces insulin resistance of our body cells and also reduces glucose production by the liver.

I suspect that the impact on the liver reduces dawn phenomenon; the frustrating tendency for blood sugar levels to rise before dawn, irrespective of diet, as our liver releases glycogen which then turns to glucose elevating our blood sugar levels in anticipation of the coming day's energy demands.
