I would like to have come back here after this long while with some good news. Well, there is a little and that's the fact that my kidney function has gone right up to 68 on this new LCHF diet. The bad news is that even though I got my HbA1c down to 37 from 44, it has now gone back up to 40. What is not good is that my cholesterol is 6.5 from 5.7. Am I to expect all this on the LCHF diet? I thought I read that some people have got their cholesterol down on it. I have also gone down to 7st 4 and the dietician has put me on fat supplements a few days ago.

What's the breakdown on your cholesterol SJC?

I can't remember because the nurse mumbled it. I did get a very quick glance and I saw 4 point something - 1 point something and 1 point something. She didn't seem remotely bothered by my 6.5 result.

Total cholesterol on its own is meaningless. You need to ask for the breakdown as these are important. You can ask for a print out as you will find this useful.

Great news about your kidneys. That must be a relief, and I wouldn't worry about the increase in your HbA1c. It is still in the non-diabetic range, so very well done.

Hi again,
Good to have you back.
I've been wondering how you were doing.

What was your kidney function before?
Glad that is good news!

Am also very interested in your cholesterol breakdown. Was it a fasting test?

And what is the fat source for your fat supplements?

Thanks to you all. I will ask my doctor by phone tomorrow to give me the breakdown. All I could see was a 4. a 1. and a 1. on the monitor. See below for kidney news :)

My kidney was at around 54 less than a year ago. I am working on memory here which isn't good, but it went back down by 2 then it went up to 58, then 66 about three months ago, and now it's at 68! Kidneys love fat, and I can tell you that I have increased my protein quite a lot. I had to to fill my plate up! I am really careful with sodium still. I am chuffed to bits about the kidney but now worried about the cholesterol as I never want to go on statins.

I am totally fed up with my diet though it has to be said. I eat veg every day and getting really fed up with it. I have been eating the skin on chicken but think I should stop that now. I finally got my breakfast sorted out with two heaped tablespoons of full fat plain yoghurt with shopped nuts and seeds. Sometimes I follow this with an oatcake and peanut butter. Trying desperately to put weight back on but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I eat one or two small slices of Burgen toast a day with butter. If I don't eat two slices and only one, I have a supper of two cheese oatcakes (Nairns) I have just started to eat two small COLD potatoes (resistant starch) with a couple of meals every week. My blood sugar didn't like reheated cold cooked pasta .

54 upto 68, that's about a 25% increase in kidney function, you have to be happy with that, how many carbs are you having on LCHF, are you full ketogenic?

there is a mouse study that anna reminded me of, that indicates that research is warranted into the LCHF ketogenic diet for kidneys
http://www.livescience.com/35630-ketogenic-diet-reverses-mice-kidney-disease.html

I am having about 70-80 gm carb a day. Some days slightly less.
l am really pleased with the kidney. I hope to talk about the connection in January with my kidney specialist.

Hi. I got the breakdown. She told me:
6.5
LDL 4.5
HDL 1.4
Serum cholesterol HDL ratio 4.6

Haven't a clue what it means - have you??

The fat supplements are little drinks called Calogen Extra Shots. They make me feel sick so I am struggling with them anyway.
Thanks :)

ask your Dr but I would take the fat part of LCHF seriously, make sure you get enough healthy fats including butter, olive and coconut oils

uk has under 1.7, your triglycerides are 1.30 with good ratios, ideally your trig could be a bit lower
these two explain LCHF cholesterol very well, it's 50/50 whether your LDL goes up or down, but particle numbers matter and not a 'volume' mass that is measured

Your Total Cholesterol of 6.5 is HIGH RISK
Your LDL of 4.5 is HIGH RISK
Your HDL of 1.4 is NORMAL
Your Triglyceride level of 1.30 is NORMAL

RATIOS:
Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 4.64 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) GOOD
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 0.311 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) GOOD
Your triglycerides/HDL ratio is: 2.126 - (preferably under 4, ideally under 2) NORMAL

That's what I have been eating. They are the only fats I eat. Butter, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil. Then I have the oil from nuts/seeds which I thought were good for you.

I am confused about that last bit of your post. Says 6.5 is high risk then the breakdown says as I am good!

I am eating a lot of hard cheese - maybe that's not helping.

It's because the calculations are wrong.

The UK's NHS website.

'
Total cholesterol level
Blood cholesterol is measured in units called millimoles per litre of blood, often shortened to mmol/L.

The government recommends that total cholesterol levels should be:

  • 5mmol/L or less for healthy adults
  • 4mmol/L or less for those at high risk

Levels of LDL and HDL
The government recommends that levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) should be:

  • 3mmol/L or less for healthy adults
  • 2mmol/L or less for those at high risk
An ideal level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is above 1mmol/L. A lower level of HDL can increase your risk of heart disease.

Your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL may also be calculated. This is your total cholesterol level divided by your HDL level. Generally, this ratio should be below four, as a higher ratio increases your risk of heart disease.

Triglycerides

Your ideal level of triglycerides should be less than 1.7mmol/l.

I put it up because knowledge is power...
given your Dr want's you to eat more fat...your Dr may be one of the clever ones, that is up to date with the latest research or you would have your statins increased, do some research and ask questions and talk it over with the Dr next time if you have any concerns

cheese should be fine, bluetit OD's on the stuff and her bloods are perfect :)
the video's would indicate that you cut some more carbs, to get your trigs a bit lower, watch the 4 video's and then ask the forum stuff, to then ask your DR

If that's the case I am in trouble but the nurse didn't seem remotely bothered.

But what is perfect? I keep reading online that cholesterol isn't connected to heart attacks etc. I read yesterday that 75% of people who have heart attacks have 'normal' cholesterol levels.

please take a few hours to go through the video's you are going to have 2 leading professors explain it all to you.
perfect for me [as per professor Sikaris] would be to have your trigs at <1 the rest are good to [for him]

I have cholesterol 3.2 but your numbers are better than mine
chol 3.2_T 1.5/ H1.2/ L1.3
