I've been Bad and oh boy has my body paid me back!
After 5 weeks since T2 Diagnosis, eating Lchf diet, I ate a handful of quality street and 4 (yes4) mince pies at 1am
Woke up this morning bloods at 16.8
Feel really sick sluggish and achy all over, dizzy when standing and basically like I've been run over by a few Eddie stobart Trucks
Lesson learnt. Eat Well = Be Well.
won't be doing this again

@clairemcg

Hello Claire and welcome to the forum :)

Now you know what New Year Resolution to make! Never mind, draw a line through it and start again. Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 130,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Hi Claire,
Oh yes. Been there, done that!
Well not exactly that. Not four mince pies. But a couple of weeks after I was first diagnosed I bought a couple of Mars Bars and .... well, erm, ate them both.
As you can imagine, bloods soared.
But it was almost like I needed to actually SEE that I really was diabetic.
Sounds silly, but do you know what I mean?
Probably me!
Take care,
Bee Gee

I know how you feel.

I've felt that kind of food/carb hangover a few more times than I like to admit.

BUT you have to understand that unless you are a machine, then a blip like this is INEVITABLE!
We are only human.
And at this time of year, we would have to be pretty obsessive not to indulge a bit.
And I would rather be fallible than obsessive.

Besides, every time you do this (there will be more, over the next few years ;)) as you have already learned, it will serve as a great reminder/incentive.

 well four mince pies were at least 140 carbs in one go, each quality street is about 4 carbs so yep, that's why you feel ill.
I saw a tip someone left on a forum once before and that was to take the pastry top off of the mince pie, thus not quite as many carbs in a pie.

Claire loads of great stuff to eat. I have been on a voyage of discovery myself, avocado, olives, red cabbage, grilled chicken, grilled everything, salmon, tuna, all the salads, yoghurts, cheeses, all yummy stuff and gets your BG levels down. Good luck and welcome.

I did that. I just....I don't know. Those chocolates just called my name and those pretzels said hello, and then I just felt like I had the flu. I went to bed and woke up in the hospital after collapsing. I've decided to ignore chocolate and all its friends, right now.

It's hard when everyone is eating the celebrations and quality streets next to me. Even tho i know it's bad i want them all.

I gave in tonight and had some quality steets and wine and nibbles! Bedtime reading was 10.4 don't think it was too bad. But will feel rough in the morning.

In my head I've decided what I'm going to allow myself and what I'm going to pass on ... I mean, who needs a parsnip when you could have another roastie?
Christmas pudding when you're already full from Christmas dinner? Nooo, save it for the mince pie and a couple of chocolates later ....
Well, that's the theory anyway ... ask me on 27th!

I feel you there, I had about 1/3 of a melon a few weeks after diagnosis (start of Oct) and my blood sugars went bonkers. I thought, well its fruit, mainly water, what can go wrong here :/ - I think that was before my metformin & educating myself a little more, which seems to do strange things when the body is wanting to go higher after an eating 'mistake'

I scared myself the other day with a fruit & nut mix, (I know, I know) I was buying my fruit & veg at the market & saw them selling it - it seemed like a healthy idea. The penny only dropped when I felt really strange later in the day - it was quite frightening to be honest getting a high after so many really good readings (5.7, 7's etc) , I went out on my bike & drank lots of water which brought me back down. Crikey, this diabetic scenario can really hit home on occasion - I take it seriously, but a lapse in thinking or taking my eye off the ball can really hit home!

Happy xmas anyhow folks :) :)

Don't worry we all have those days. It will settle down. Especially after the first couple of months.

Thank you, its good to know it will get easier :) (if I dare use that word)

Sometimes it all seems a bit much but I know as with anything in life once I get my head around it & it becomes part of my routine, I hope it'll not happen anymore (or as much!)
