Hi there on this snowy winter's day. I have just read one of the daily news items posted on the forum. Can somebody explain what is meant by 131% of Type 1 diabetics were twice as likely to die with cardiovascular complications than non diabetics please? Keep warm everyone x

If you read the article, it is referring to diabetes who have poor control.

The report believes that poorly controlled diabetes across blood testing, blood pressure and cholesterol across a long period could be attributed to these deaths.

A systematic review of thorough checks for exercise, weight and blood pressure has been called for by the NDA to enhance the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascularcomplications in diabetics.

Has to be a typo.... otherwise it would mean that out of 100 people, 131 would be affected! Doesn't compute.

It's garbled.
The DUK report of the same item says:
'Those with Type 1 diabetes were 131 per cent more likely to die in 2013 than their peers of their age without the condition and those with Type 2 diabetes were 32 per cent more likely to die'
so basically 2 and 1/3 times more likely :(
full report here
http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News/National-Diabetes-Audit-2015/
and another one here which does include the slightly more optimistic statement

"Despite the high numbers, there are early signs that numbers of diabetes patients experiencing these complications may be on the fall. But ‘significant geographical variations’ in care across England and Wales are causing some patients to be at much greater risk of developing complications or dying prematurely"

edit the full report is here

Thank you dannyw and marvin for understanding what I was getting at. I felt I'd had a telling off by the moderator for asking the question. I understood the article it was the 131% I was confused about.
