We've all experienced difficulties obtaining test strips , especially with the new laws on testing and driving requiring us to ask for more strips during a time of financial constraints . I ask for them on my repeat prescription form every month , but i haven't been given them since november . However , for the last 3 months my request for insulin has not been honoured until i resubmit my repeat , and even then am only given a supply for 2 weeks rather than for 1 month .
I have waited 6 weeks for an appointment to see my GP , and her answer was to increase my repeat back up to 4 weeks worth , although once again no insulin was included in my last (february) signed scripts . I have resubmitted my claim again and hope to have some insulin by monday .
I have been on insulin now since 2005 and have never experienced any difficulties getting my repeat prescriptions until recently . However , it is quite normal for those intellectuals running the practice to miss things off the list or mix up the wrong item , so i have to be constantly vigilent . At first i assumed this was all that was happening , until my resubmitted repeat came back signed by a member of the practice i have never seen and who had gone into my records and amended my monthly repeat to a fortnight's supply . If he had to go into my records to do this , he could easily have verified my dosage to confirm what he was denying me .
I have tried making an appointment with my practice nurse who manages my diabetes , in order to determine exactly what i should do if i finally run out of insulin , and who to turn to in the likelihood of such an event . However , all appointments were booked up for february and march , with april appointments not coming available on line until this monday .
I must stress however , that although they are not giving me my insulin on first request , i am getting it on resubmission , although my lack of strips is worrying should i have to ration my supplies and need to test more regularly . I use novomix 30 , 60 units twice a day . Restricting strips is one thing , but cuts in finances affecting the supply of necessary medicines like this is extremely worrying , and i would be interested to learn if this is just me being unlucky , or whether this disturbing trend is becoming more widespread .
