Is anyone else having difficulty obtaining insulin because of the cuts ???

We've all experienced difficulties obtaining test strips , especially with the new laws on testing and driving requiring us to ask for more strips during a time of financial constraints . I ask for them on my repeat prescription form every month , but i haven't been given them since november . However , for the last 3 months my request for insulin has not been honoured until i resubmit my repeat , and even then am only given a supply for 2 weeks rather than for 1 month .
I have waited 6 weeks for an appointment to see my GP , and her answer was to increase my repeat back up to 4 weeks worth , although once again no insulin was included in my last (february) signed scripts . I have resubmitted my claim again and hope to have some insulin by monday .
I have been on insulin now since 2005 and have never experienced any difficulties getting my repeat prescriptions until recently . However , it is quite normal for those intellectuals running the practice to miss things off the list or mix up the wrong item , so i have to be constantly vigilent . At first i assumed this was all that was happening , until my resubmitted repeat came back signed by a member of the practice i have never seen and who had gone into my records and amended my monthly repeat to a fortnight's supply . If he had to go into my records to do this , he could easily have verified my dosage to confirm what he was denying me .

I have tried making an appointment with my practice nurse who manages my diabetes , in order to determine exactly what i should do if i finally run out of insulin , and who to turn to in the likelihood of such an event . However , all appointments were booked up for february and march , with april appointments not coming available on line until this monday .

I must stress however , that although they are not giving me my insulin on first request , i am getting it on resubmission , although my lack of strips is worrying should i have to ration my supplies and need to test more regularly . I use novomix 30 , 60 units twice a day . Restricting strips is one thing , but cuts in finances affecting the supply of necessary medicines like this is extremely worrying , and i would be interested to learn if this is just me being unlucky , or whether this disturbing trend is becoming more widespread .

Being type 1, my health and what really grates me are false people who make themselves out to be something when their not
Hi wilbo1948
This sounds rediculous, I get 8 weekly scripts with no problems and if I run short of insulin or strips I just put an emergency script in and as long as it's before 11am it's ready at 5pm.
I did have a doctor back in 82-83 call me in to the surgery and ask if I could eat less so I didn't need so much insulin, being a cocky 19-20 yr old I called him some choice words and put an official complaint in and never had a problem thereafter.
You must take this further, do you see the same doctor each time, try and get an emergency appointment or there must be a practice manager .
Others on here will give you more of where to write or phone.
It annoys me so much when we try to be a good patient and treat ourselves and we don't get the backup of something so essential .
Good luck

Not being able to eat as many chocolate digestives as I used to.
Don't know if it would make a difference but are you a T1 or an insulin dependent T2? Sounds to me like you need to register with a different surgery if it is at all possible.

I'm T1 and I've not had a problem with insulin and don't think anybody should. The stress of wondering where your next injection is coming from is the last thing you need. I do sometimes buy extra test strips on-line, simply to avoid even the risk of arguments with the GP.

I suppose you don't have any idea whether your surgery is really penny pinching or just incompetent?

Wilbo, please make an official complaint. Write to the practice manager. Then take it further if no joy.

Get a solicitor who specialises in medical negligence to send a letter. I have a friend who had similar problems though not for insulin.
You will be surprised how well it worked.

hi @urbanracer

see link attached for related info http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Documents/Advocacy/test-strips-advocacy-pack-0613.pdf

also -- if probs with gp -- see your endo and get them to write to your gp for an increase
you should not need to resort to buying strips

Hi,

Personally I would work out what is used during a "month". & armed with this information set up a reveiw of the repeat perscyption..

I have never had an issue with my surgery, though I found I was putting in a second request for more test cartrages online when they ran out before the rest of my script.. They doubled the amount. No questions asked..

I use Levemir and Novorapid and have had no problems at all in having scripts honoured and dispensed. Either you are using an unsual insulin or your surgery is in deep trouble.

Well , thank you everyone for all your help . It would appear it's my GP surgery , or rather the admin staff . Thank you @@urbanracer for your link to Diabetes UK Advocacy Pack . This has led me to contact my own Flintshire Advocacy Services who have helped me draft a letter to the Practice Manager for my GP , and agreed to take it further following any reply . They did , however , mention that it was not the first (or the tenth) time that they had had similar complaints with this practice , and that no matter how personable I found my GP it may be advisable to transfer to somebody else . My mind is at rest now , that I have put my problem into context and discovered a route by which I hope to be able to sort it out . :) .
