That's interesting @Bluetit1802 It's not something I was aware of, as I don't take them and I am even less likely to take them now. It seems a bit counterproductive to prescribe something for a condition (cholesterol) that can exacerbate something which can cause heart problems which the original prescription was trying to avoid?
Yes unfortunately you're right @sanguine but you might hope that HCP's would have the intelligence and integrity not to blindly lead their patients down a path to further health problems.
It's such a hard decision to make isn't it @caliban . I too have cardiac problems but have refused statins in the past despite having high cholesterol, as I am unable to understand why something that the body produces naturally can be so harmful (if you believe the medical profession). Also I am on an enormous cocktail of different meds and just couldn't face adding to the bubbling cauldron
Yes, what do we do @Glynn123rifles? It's quite scary isn't it and we rely to a certain extent on the medical profession to give us best advice, but unfortunately they often seem as unaware of possible problems as many patients are.
Interesting that liver function returned to normal after stopping them @hankjam . Can I ask how long ago that was and how you are feeling in yourself?
So difficult this one , Jane I to take medications for other health problems when I found out how high my cholestrol was I choose to try them , no problrms so far ....and my numbers are good ...I might try reducing the statins at some point ....but I don't want blocked or furred arteries if they are working for me at the moment ...it is a real,pain adding another tablet to the list ...with you on that one ...never easy ...It's such a hard decision to make isn't it @caliban . It's probably illogical, but when you hear soooooo many stories about the side effects it doesn't make sense to ignore others' experiences, Imo.
Also my brother-in-law takes them because he has slightly raised cholesterol and is crippled with muscular pain, but 'oh no the doctor knows best, so I must keep taking them'. Sigh!
It's not easy is it Kat, especially as you get a little older and expect aches and pains anyway, to know whether it's caused by medication or is just a part of the aging process. I confess it worries me reading about the muscle destruction caused by statins and ...............hang on a minute, as I was typing that I remembered that the heart is the biggest muscle in the body, so is that immune to attack by statins I wonder.
Really? Now you live and learn, I didn't know that. How on earth can they market and prescribe drugs for everyone that haven't been tested fully.
