Taking Metformin

I've been insulin dependent for nearly 25 years and have been having trouble of late with my blood sugar control.

My diabetic specialist has put me on metformin to help get some control back, and I have to say that it is working (yay).

My question is, how long do I have to keep taking it before my digestion settles down?

depends are you on the slow release, it's better on the gut, also you may find reduced carbs help
I took one tablet for a week then increased to 2, then 3 and then 4 to 2000mg

I couldn't say. The box just says Metformin 500mg.

I started on them the same way you describe.

And I've now been taking 'em for nearly 2 months and the results are still "explosive".

If "explosive" refers to the stomach then I am suffering from Met too and for that reason it is called metfartin
If its not suiting you speak to the doc and he will be able to change it to a slower release version

Hi. Sounds like you need the SR version as the packet implies it's the plain version. I wonder whether your blood sugar control problem is due to some excess weight? If so that might explain why you have been put onto Metformin to reduce inuslin resistance? Are you one a low-carb diet which will help control weight gain with insulin.

Sounds like you should try the Sustained Release or Extended Release version of Metformin. Lowering carb intake is effective as well. I had horrendous problems in the beginning, seventeen years ago, to the point of not wanting to ever leave the house. My GP never suggested XR or SR when it became available because it's considerably more expensive.

Glad you mentioned that SR is "considerably more expensive" - I tried to convince this fact to a doubter who stated that they (Ord and SR) were about the same price which, in Bali, is not the case because SR/EXR is TWICE the price of original and I cannot aftord buy it..
