When I was a teenager we had lots of fun on bikes, I used to hang round with a group of lassies and lads of both persuasions and we had trips out to places with packed lunches, we were happy just pootling about, popping into various notorious cafes and riding round Brands Hatch and The Saltbox Café.
I always wanted to have a motor bike but couldn't manage the gears so when I had the chance in my 30's to get a bike I had a 200cc Lambretta and sidecar, my kids loved sitting in the sidecar and being picked up from school, all of a sudden their mum was cool, and as they got a bit older I was still cool when they were dropped off at various clubs in the evening, my oldest daughter took up biking and drove a Suzuki for years before getting a car,
I remember the clashes at Brighton between the Mods and Rockers, we kept well away from them, does anyone else remember those days.

I'm sure there's more.
I remember watching the mods and rocker seaside riots on the news.
I'm 61 so just missed that side of life and instead arrived just in time to be a hippy.

Now would I be a Mod, are their some good things about it? would I be a rocker ?well from the above photo's I'm moving towards the rocker lad, but a Mod girl look I think.
In 1964 ,I would of been just 6 years old :angelic: I had 3 older brothers, I think my youngest brother was a mod, and 14 at the time.

Although I was just too young to be either, I would probably have ended up a rocker as I ended up with a Triumph Trophy 500cc motorbike. I only wish I hadn't sold it just before I got married in the late '70's. :(

I'm an ex-biker and was heavily into rock/heavy rock music, never had a problem with the Mods and never understood why both groups would want to fight each other.

Didn't it all start with the teddy boys and, erm, another 'group'?

Mod! Into Nortern soul and Motown, too busy to be bothered with the other tribes. But some early hippies were a pain!
It was into my late teens when skinheads evolved, and I can remember them as not being racist or associated with neo Nazis. In fact because of the music, they had more in common with anti racial sympathies than anything else. They became politicised because of huge unemployment in the Thatcher era.
Fun days hah!

Still wear Ben Sherman shirts and have a Harrington! Walked past Top Man, and there they are in the window, latest fashion again. Good design never goes out of fashion.

Very true Nosher.
The skins were into Ska music ... black music.
Most Ska bands of the time had black and white musicians in the band.

If you look at the really popular group, ub40, (wonder how they got their name?) they were a brummie group. Some great music.
Madness, they had their background from ska. Playing to the London mod scene.
We used to go the Top Rank in Liverpool, and we danced and mingled with everybody no matter what colour you were.

Yeah my main late night hang out was a west Indian club in Moss Side called The New Reno Club... I couldn't remember the name for a moment there!
Dark low ceilinged basement thick with Maryjane aromas.
Upstairs was a different club which was called The Nile Club and casino.
Consisted of a very small bar and a room with huge round tables where some serious cash was gambled at cards.
Both places often suffered raids.
Great memories.
