I was admitted to hospital with ketoacidosis and am now diagnosed type 1. I'm still in hospital having my insulin sorted out but what I need to know of once I'm discharged how long should I give it until returning to work

My son is new to all this too, and was diagnosed as type 1 on saturday 6 days ago, he has been off all week as on annual leave, but is going back to work on Monday, I would seek advise of your diabetes nurse and depending on how you feel and your job go back to work as soon as possible. I am sure once back at work in your usual routine you will feel more positive as sitting at home dwelling sometimes can make things worse. Hope this has been helpful

As long as you're feeling ok and that you're adjusting well there's no need for you to take time off if you don't wish to.
If I were you I'd maybe take some time to work out your insulin needs and what not. But it all depends on how you're feeling with it all. :)
Good luck

Hi firstly sorry to hear. However I agree with the last comment. I would consult with your nurse specialist or consultant and try to be put on a DAFNE programme (dose adjustment for normal eating). That course would put you at ease to rationalise your daily insulin intake. As for returning to work, if you feel okay in yourself and comfortable with your intake of background insulin as well as your quick acting insulin then why not and "go for it"... You have to tell yourself this "you own your condition... It does not own you...."

Welcome to the forum :) Its really up to you, when you want to return to work. I took me a week to sort out my insulin doses (more or less). You might need more, and if you can, take it.

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Hi and welcome!!

People react and handle a T1diagnosis differently. I was in hosp (not in DKA)- as 30+ years they used to take you in. I was out on Friday and back to work on the Saturday.

However, it depends totally upon the job you do.. If you were a pilot you wouldn't be able to fly again! If you are a fitness instructor you may want to do a week at home trialling all the fitness routines etc before going back to work. If you are a shop manager as I was then I just had to manage my eating (and injecting) and find my routine out "live"
There is no right or wrong. You must do what you feel is right for you.
Perhaps sit with amember if your hospital team and tell them your work routine etc and go through things with them.
There will be hurdles. You may fall at some but I would imagine you could jump the majority.
