I must have been 'lucky', I got a place on a DESMOND course the week after I was diagnosed. When I came home I went through my cupboards, with all the zeal of the newly converted, and disposed of all things white (sugar, rice, pasta, bread etc) and bought all things brown, to replace the 'white' as recommended by the lovely NHS dietitian. Then I found the people who REALLY know what they're talking about on these forums.
I went through my cupboards and disposed of all things 'brown' oh yes, and low fat. My daughter didn't need to shop for a month!!!

I'm on the right track now though, losing weight slowly but surely and BG getting better (around 7) So, don't be too unhappy if you haven't been offered a 'free NHS course' It cost me a fortune

Diabetic since 1972, type 1. Went on a New Deal course (aka Dafne in England - I live in Scotland) two years ago. Changed my life- no exaggeration. Really enjoyed it and learned a huge amount from very caring and knowledgeable professional diabetes specialists. They made it fun and informative. So if you do manage to get offered one, I hope it's as good an experience as mine was. It does help if you have an excellent health care diabetes team, which I do. I can't fault them in any way.️

I have had type 1 for 18yrs and have never been offered any courses.

I am diagnosed LADA and have been on DAFNE (two years after diagnosis) - in Scotland and on the course I was on half the participants were LADA. Course was run by DSN and dietician, they didn't push any particular lifestyle choices and I thought it was brilliant - learned so much on it.

I have to admit when the course was first Proposed, I thought there is nothing you can teach me but just how wrong I was!! I really enjoyed it, and I learned a huge amount like I said previously. The DSNs and dietitian plus the consultant were so "human" and non judgemental. We all had a laugh and great discussions too plus it was great to share stories with other diabetics. @fairylights so pleased you enjoyed it too. After reading loads of stuff on here I am convinced we in Scotland have superior diabetic care. Forth Valley where I live, the care and attention is amazing. Wish every diabetic could have the same. X

I've never been sent on a course either. I got couple if leaflets and that was it. I'm type 2. Maybe that's why?

Yeah the BDEC online one certainly gave me most of what I know. Only things I really learned when I did DAFNE was sick day rules.

If you live in UK you should be able to sign up online at http://bdec-e-learning.com/ and run through the course.

as well as the course. This set of workbooks is worth reading and practising working examples of carbs, doses and correction, as a refresher.

Out of Addenbrookes certainly. My GP is another story since the practice nurse has openly said on a number of occasions that I have a much more advanced understanding than she does.

My husband was offered a place on DESMOND within 6 weeks of diagnosis i went with him and we learned a lot. It was only 1 day and is aimed at people with type 2. There were about 7 people who had had diabetes for various lengths of time. I wasnt looking forward to it at all as I am not keen on sitting in rooms been lectured but it wasnt like that at all. I now tell all of my patients with diabetes to ask their practice nurse about going. It amazes me that within our area some people get offered a place and some dont.i must admit though we didnt pay much attention to the low fat and wholemeal carb thing as i had already read 9n this for re.low carb and.it made.total sense.to me. Given that hubby has lost nearly 3 stone since Christmas I reckon we are doing something right

40 yrs this year and not 1 course there wasn't anything years back so me and my parents learnt carb counting and insulin ratios etc, since pumping (15 yrs) excellent control. Did ask to go on a course when I started pumping but the nurse I asked didn't think there was much point as I knew as much as her. it's never been put to me since and I've never asked, so do I don't I ? Plus getting there for me is a real issue ( not making excuses )

I was diagnosed in mid-January and I'll be on a DESMOND course this Thursday coming. I'll let you know how it goes. Since diagnosis I've been following the advice of the good people on this forum and have had great results, so it will be interesting to hear what the course administrators say.
