Just seen the Practice Nurse and my result has come in at 32 which I am delighted with.

I attribute this to my LCHF lifestyle. Unfortunately she says my Total Cholesterol is 5.2 and wants to see me again in 8 weeks.

How can I get it down in 8 weeks?

Excellent HbA1c result there, Vinny.

You need to know the breakdown of your lipids, as acting on just the total is making a decision without the full facts available. My lipids have almost always been the subject of those "special chats" with my medical advisors, as my totals have never ever gone below 5, and usually well above. But, because the breakdown is "so good", my GP doesn't want to do anything. To be fair though, this is a complete turnaround from six months ago, when she wanted to refer me to a lipid specialist; such were her concerns.

Six months ago, I left her with a load of notes and references I was using to come to my own conclusions, and it looks like her thinking has caught me up!

Please get your breakdowns. It's important.

No, just Total Cholesterol...
As AndBreathe mentioned, can you get a print out of your results. Surgery should give you this. Then it is possible to work out the ratios of 'good' and 'bad' cholesterol. These need to be considered before being railroaded into taking statins.

Well done on your HbA1c :woot:
My GP has agreed to make sure all the figures are available at the next cholesterol test, which she will bring forward to 6 months instead of 12 to see how I'm getting on without statins. My cholesterol overall was 5.1 in Feb but the few breakdown figures I've been able to glean over the past couple of years (very spasmodic) have been fine.
Since you're doing so well I wouldn't worry. Just enjoy your newfound wellbeing.

They'll only give you a print out of your cholesterol result if a full lipid breakdown has been requested, if they have only asked the lab to test for Total Cholesterol then they may not have the results, I know when I have my bloods taken I always make a point of saying its a fasting cholesterol test and I want a full lipid breakdown.

Well done on your Hba1c Vinny James :)

Just spoke to one of the receptionists and she said;

HDL. 1.9

LDL 2.7

Trigs 1.3

Doesn't mean too much to me...

I suggest you put those values into this website, the click calculate.

http://www.hughcalc.org/chol-si.php

Aside from the 5.2 (which I'd be extremely happy with, everything else is coming out as green (based on red, amber green ratings).

Frankly, I think your nurse is very much out of touch.

These are your values

That does look good but I think I need to do a lot of reading around lipid profiles and ratios...

There not too far out, the following is the target cholesterol levels that they want people with diabetes to aim for:

  • Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.
  • LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l.
  • HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.
  • Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

My surgery has just started charging £5 for this. Am going to photograph the results sheets with my phone next time!

Challenge them! They can charge reasonable expenses! How much would one print out cost? A couple of pence.

I already did; told them they were penalising patients for being interested in their test data in order to motivate them to work to improve their health. When I was first referred the hospital department (ophthalmology) that arranged the test did not charge me for the test result sheets. The surgery receptionist just looked glumly at me and gave me a complaints slip to fill in.

That's outrageous! I just ring Dr's and ask for results, then write them down as she reads them to me. I hope your complaint was strongly worded.
