Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so apologies if this is placed in the wrong forum section.

I am looking to relocate from Australia to the UK and I am wondering about the cost of managing diabetes type 1 in the UK?

I'm struggling to find information on the cost of my medications and medical supplies.
I am on Humalog, Lantus, Diabex (metformin) and Lipidil (fenofibrate).

I understand there is something called the NHS, but I'm very unfamiliar with the health system in the UK and hope someone can point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

Hiya,

It really depends on where in the UK you will be.

Prescriptions are free in Scotland so wouldnt cost a penny.

I think (dont quote me on this) that its around £8/9 per prescription but you can get a medical excemption certificate.

I am not really 100% sure how it works though as I have never stayed in England (sorry!!)

Thanks! I have no idea at all so any rough figure is helpful!

Hopefully there will be other replies too.

Thanks again!

are you type 2?

I ma in Scotland, but I believe you can get your stuff free if you have your exemption certificate.....

coming from Australia and assuming your a citizen there obtaining a certificate might not be that easy.........at least in the beginning...

sorry I couldn't specify costs.......

Hi Meetoe
welcome to the forum :)

here is a link for info on prescriptions in england

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/claiming-free-prescriptions

one assumption I am making is that you are coming to live permanently ?
You would need to register and get an National Insurance number and also with a GP

Ooh thank you so much, this is very informative!

I would be coming over on a working holiday visa at first, but i think I would still need to get the NI (?).

Thanks again!!!

I think it's got a whole lot more complicated in recent months.
As you are from Australia you seem to be exempt from the new 'health surcharge' but looks as if you still have to fill in the right form and get number. https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application/when-you-need-to-pay
There are pathways through the legalities here. https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/work-visas (there are working holiday visas ie Youth Mobility scheme but also Ancestry visas that might apply to you)
