I have just gone through the information leaflet that the Diabetic Nurse hands out at the GP surgery. There is some conflicting advice in this and what is posted on this site. In the Ten Steps To Eating Well section it says to include starchy carbs in each meal such as bread, pasta, rice etc. It says this is important to control BS!
Now I am totally confused. I thought the above advice would increase my BS.
Posts on here say do not eat these foods. As this leaflet has been published by this site it confuses me as to what your advice is now.
I am due to see the Nurse today and do not know what to say to her. Is this leaflet out of date?

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.

DUK and DCUK are separate organisations. DUK is apparently funded by cereal manufacturers.

If I were you, I wouldn't say anything to the nurse about carbs. Let her tell you whatever she is going to tell you, and if she tells you to eat lots of carbs, just smile and nod. She probably doesn't know any better.

It is still very conflicting though

It can be, and at first you will find it hard to see the wood for the trees.

So many people have been helped by the advice and support received on this forum (I'm one of them) that I can really recommend that you read as much as you can, and take control of your Diabetes by taking control of your diet. It is difficult at first to go against what appears to be the conventional wisdom peddled by the NHS and other seemingly reputable sources, but cutting the carbs from your diet really is the way to go.

Hi carb Foods
At risk of being accused of giving medical advice, I usually avoid saying that I follow a lower carb diet, rather i say that I follow a carbohydrate controlled diet.

Diabetes.UK and Diabetes.co.uk are completely different sites ... Think you are looking at a leaflet published by the Diabetes UK not from here.
Just remember that whatever way of eating you follow .. All carbs turn to sugar when eaten.. If you self fund a blood sugar meter and test before eating then 2 hours after eating you will be able to see what works for you

@Olaf-Jensen hope your meeting with the diabetes specialist nurse (DSN) went well today. Those of us who have got their diabetes under control by using LCHF are all familiar with the "nod and smile" approach to being told to eat starchy carbs. The NHS are slowly coming round to accepting the benefits of low carb for diabetics, and some of us try to explain it to our health care professionals (HCP) but some of us just dodge the questions!

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/at-last-in-the-british-medical-journal.81487/ This is a link to a post from a GP who is registered on here and is starting to get his research into LCHF published :)

Hi. Yes, nod and smile feeling sad that the NHS that we fund is making diabetics have amputations in the longer-term and a shorter life if you follow their advice - great. There is a large imoveable establishment funded by food and pharma manufacturers in the background. Follow the diet advice on this forum as typically we know what works well for us.

Why would you be accused of giving medical advice when talking about your diet?

My partner is type 2 diabetic. He was given a leaflet about eating carbs, but I put him on a low carb diet. He still has some with most meals, but not a lot. We eat really well and have just made a few substitutions e.g I do mashed sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes and I buy Burgen Soya and Linseed bread instead of white as this doesn't seem to affect him like white bread. (I mentioned this bread to a nurse at the clinic and she said "Yes, lots of our patients say that bread is very good". Yet I had to find out about it through the forum because nobody mentioned it at the clinic!) As a snack he has plain unsalted nuts, peanut butter or plain yogurt. We have always eaten plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit and I always buy proper fish or meat, not anything processed. At his last visit to the diabetic specialist the doctor was thrilled with his blood levels and said "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it". I also asked to see a dietician and she said she couldn't tell me anything that I wasn't already doing. Hope this helps. It does get easier. I used to spend hours in the supermarket reading all the labels, but now I can whizz around as normal. A lot of it is trial and error and finding substitutes.

What is the carbs on the bread and where do you get it? I found a German flat seed bread in ASDA. Has 39 carb a loaf there are 8 slices in it

That worked for me as well.
Never did any nodding and smiling, (that phrase always reminds me of the Churchill type dog that used to be on the parcel shelf of cars many years ago), just told them what I ate, what my BG was like after, and they always agreed to keep on doing it.
Then gave me more strips to let me keep on doing it! :)

Helps even more now, as I've gone through the same re-testing with new food out here, and never had a problem getting enough supplies to cover my time here.

Keep your nurse on board if you can.

I found the information given to me by the diabetic nurse said eat carbs with every meal, she also said ignore any other site apart from Diabetes UK - I got confused and found this site, a great deal of the information took me a while to take on board but finally gave in and brought my own testing kit - have discovered potatoes are fine, all wheat products are really bad and long grain rice is a no but basmati rice is fine.
I have been searching for bread type substitute and I have not found any I either like or will eat - I will take the info from here and try the Burgen Soya and Linseed Bread and see how I get on as I really miss a slice of toast....
I am trying to remain low carb and to continue with weight loss but struggling as stress levels are quite high right now - so trying to be kind to myself and keep the weight steady right now.
I feel pretty much like the medical profession gave me the information and I have been sent off to deal with it. They say I can phone with any questions but getting through to my doctors surgery is not an easy option.
So reading loads and getting emails from America saying they can cure it but just deleting them as I don't totally trust the information.
Free from section in supermarkets I have found either replace wheat flour with rice flour which I am not able to have or they pack the food with sugar so again cannot have so would advise to avoid the area.
I was only diagnosed a few months ago so I feel I have a lot of learning still to do and still spend ages reading labels only to be disappointed in the end and put the item back on the shelf.

Yeah its hard for me too. Only started to cook proper again about a week ago. Started very low carbs but finding now I have headaches most of the morning. Looking into making my own bread(cost). Mainly eat fish and lentils, cabbage, eggplant and some fruit and cream at night. These headaches are starting to get me down. Also, I have noticed have blurred vision since low card!
