You're entitled to having a useless pancreas.

In all seriousness, what are you specifically asking about?

I'm interested to hear the (legitimate) responses to see how things differ from the U.S. (where I live).

Personally, I'm very much against socialized healthcare and some of the horror stories I hear on this forum only further confirm that.

No, apart from getting free prescriptions (make sure your exemption certificate/card is up to date) there is nothing you can get just for having type 1, only if you are disabled by complications and then it is that not the diabetes per se that may make you entitled.

I am almost amused whenever I hear americans say how against socialised healthcare they are and talk of the horror of the NHS when I all I seem to hear is the reverse and the horrors of insurance coverages or lack of in the US!

The grass is always greener on the other side, I suppose.

I'm pretty happy with my insurance company so far to be honest. I was amazed to hear that many people had to pay out of pocket for things like a Dexcom CGM. It's also amazing to hear all the horror stories people tell about their doctors and nurses. When I don't like one of mine, I simply go to another.

When my panc decided to stop working, My husband called an ambulance, the crew spend 40 minutes, getting me stable and gave pain relief, free of charge, I was taken to hospital free of charge and admitted to ICU where I spent 10 days free of charge, my son's American friend worked out with all the tests, scans, Drs, surgeons etc in the first 48 hours it would have cost around £2500,000 if I paid, this was all free of charge, the month I spend in hospital was free of charge, 3 months another emergency admission was also free of charge, a tumour that was found was removed free of charge later the same year, all the after care, etc was free of charge I was offered a home help which would have been free of charge, then when I became diabetic another emergency admission, for 14 days free of charge. The NHS saved my life 3 times in 18 months and it cost me nothing. The treatment and care was second to none. Anything out of the ordinary with my regular free blood test, scans etc are picked up and treated free of charge.
I have 21 different medications each month, all given free of charge if I had to pay they would cost just under £9 for each item, some of my meds cost £100+ to the NHS.
So yes sometimes it isn't great but then again there is no guarantee private health care will be better, bearing in mind that rubbish doctors in Britain usually have links to private clinics as well, so if they are bad it doesn't matter if it is social or private

I've lived in the US, UK, and Turkey, and my sister, also Type 1, was diagnosed while living in France. In my experience Type 1s get the best "deal" in France and Turkey. Both have a "mixed" system. You pay at least part of your medical costs up-front, but they are refunded by the state in proportion to your income. You can choose your own doctor, and change if you don't like him/her, and you can use a free state service, or a private one. In the US I just couldn't afford treatment (I didn't have insurance initially and my employers didn't provide it). I didn't stay long. In the UK I was asking for a pump for ten years and never got one. In Turkey I got my pump as soon as I asked for it (one week later to be precise). My sister was given a pump as soon as she was diagnosed in France, and it was seeing how excellent her control was (as a "novice" diabetic) that made me furious with the NHS' policies on pumps. I think the NHS needs to be changed. It's ridiculous that Turkey, a developing country, can offer better treatment.

If you are asking about disability benefits then no unless you are disabled by diabetes complications.

Having diabetes doesn't stop you leading a normal healthy life :)

As far as I know, I think carers allowance for a type 1 child, stops when they reach 14. Did your GP give a reason as to why he would think money/benefit would be given ? we do get free prescriptions.

I don't understand why you would be paid for having diabetes?

She just asked a simple question, even her GP told her she should be getting some 'money' for having type 1 ? Thing is, if you don't ask, how are you going to find out things (without actually Googling all the time) :)
