Third generation T1, diagnosed in 1996 at the age of 38. My mother was T1, at the age of 38 as well, and she had an older half-brother who was T1, though I don't know any more than that about him. Her sister, my aunt, developed T1 about five or six years ago, in her mid-seventies. Their father, my grandfather, was diagnosed in the 1920s and was an early insulin-taker - of his six older siblings, five died from diabetes.

Negativity & being around people who thrive on high drama, gossip and conspiracy theories.
Diagnosed in May 2015 as T2 initially but diagnosis changed to LADA when subsequent tests showed HIGH antibody count in the presence of other autoimmune disorders (Hashimoto's disease, asthma). Effectively Type 1 as I'm now on insulin injections and carb counting. Mother had diabetes - diagnosed as Type 2 but she was probably Type 1 because she also add other autoimmune issues. Brother diagnosed as Type 1 at age 40; he's now 63 with no complications. I come from a large family and there's no sign that anyone else in the family has this condition.

Newly diagnosed at age 26 with T1. Around 3 months now. Wanted to know if there is a history of diabetes running in your family? No one that i know has diabetes, doctors are surpised, and want to do more tests on me. Is it that uncommon getting diagnosed over 25 years? This is my first time posting here, have been reading for a while and wow this forum has answered alot of questions that no doctor can answer! Thank you :)
Hi, I was diagnosed T1 at 28, they also found it odd as I know of no one in my family who also has T1, however has time has gone on I've realised its not always genetic and not as unusual as they make it out to be

Me and my sister, my sister was 1st and lucky for me she was (she is 7 years older and got it at 5), i was 10 months old when i go diagnosed and if it hadnt have been for my sister developing it, my mum wouldnt have known the symptoms - especially in a 10 month old baby, no other type 1s. My mum does have thyroid problems and over the years i have developed thyroid, epilepsy, lupus SLE and sjogrens and my sister pernicious anaemia (along with my mum - pernicious anaemia) so deffo some autoimmune thing going on in our family!

Hi there! I was diagnosed at 26 with type 1, though it took doctors ages to diagnose as they thought I had kidney stones as I was in that much pain with my back (probably as I was weeing out so much glucose) the doctors found it very strange that I had type 1 at 26. Plus I'm a nurse and lots of medical colleagues were surprised, shows how little people know about type 1, which is scary really. I only recently found out my mums sisters have type 2 tablet controlled diabetes, but no one else and no type 1s in family. Hope you get lots of support @Rosieice lizzie xx

I was diagnosed recently at 29.

My sister has T1D as well and was diagnosed when she was 4 (so like 30 years ago) beyond her no one else in my family has T1 or T2.

So yeah, its really strange, but i guess its common. A lot of what i was reading was that people are born with the potential to develop it but something in their environment has to trigger that to actually develop it.

No Other Type 1's in my family, I was diagnosed aged 30 in 2001. My Dad is Type 2, diagnosed in 2008, (but has never been overweight, although was a relatively heavy drinker), one of my brother's is Type 3c (Due to Cystic Fibrosis)

Hi, I was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 20. On one side of the family I have two other cousins diagnosed as kids. One cousin diagnosed as a type 1 at 46 year old. Same side loads of SLIM, FIT AND HEALTHY diagnosed as type 2. My dad was type 2 at 41, but he'd lost weight before diagnoses, I think he was a misdiagnosed LADA. He ended up on insulin. His mum was type 2. His nan was type 1 but diagnosed just after giving birth to my nan and before insulin was found so that was a short life.
If you are not diabetic in my family the joke is the milk man was involved.

I'm a 4th generation type 1 my uncle who is 80 years old is still alive and was diagnosed when he was 30. Both he and I have medals for having diabetes for 50 years :)
It's surprising though how many over 25 are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
How is your uncle's general health? I'm really worried about future complications.

Diagnosed Jan 2015, age 27. No history of type 1 in my family, don't think anyone has type 2 either. most of us pretty healthy. twin sister developed scoliosis recently. i had asthma for a couple of years in my teens.
I'm petrified about complications. I've always done my best to live a healthy lifestyle but I guess these things happen!
On a positive note, my diagnosis helped me to realise I was actually suffering from lactose intolerance too and now all of the very severe symptoms of that condition have pretty much disappeared completely. Also, I'm probably fitter and stronger than I've ever been because I'm forced to look after myself to the max!
Sorry for the essay!

My youngest was diagnosed type 1 a month before his 4th birthday, no history of type 1 or type 2 in either side of the family.

Good to hear your dad had no complications. Even more remarkable as treatment must have been more primitive when he was diagnosed. I've been told by GP and even a specialist in hospital I might have MODY and I cling on to hope that that's true. In fact, my GP (who admittedly didn't have great knowledge of type 1 diabetes) was quite confident I have MODY, only because I was still on low doses of insulin nearly a year after diagnosis - I was/ am taking about 8 units of bolus (?) before a good-sized meal of, for example, pasta.
