    Hair disappearing on legs...

When I had my first appointment with the podiatrist after diagnosis 7 years ago she commented on my hairless feet. She said it was common in diabetics due to poor circulation in the lower limbs. Hope this helps.

Too many things going on at the same time - confusing

Hi @LittleGreyCat, I had the shingles and flu vaccinations a few weeks ago, but the flu jab 2 days after the shingles. No reaction whatsoever to the shingles jab but the day after the flu jab (the over 65s version) I definitely felt fatigued and ended up falling asleep on the sofa for 2 hours...

Diabetic, but only in the morning ?

@Resurgam that is exactly my experience as well. I am much more sensitive to carbs in the morning than the rest of the day. I too have found I get better results by adding around 8 grams of carbs at breakfast. I have four meals per day with the carb content as follows: breakfast 8g lunch 10g...

    Can you explain this?

Thanks for the insight @HSSS. I never eat after 9:00 pm and bedtime is usually my lowest reading of the day. I always eat breakfast within 15 minutes of waking up. I have come to the conclusion that my body likes higher levels in the morning. From lunchtime on I have pretty good readings.

I use olive oil for all frying. Fried eggs & tomatoes are delicious.

    Can you explain this?

Hi @jim1951, Just to reassure you, exactly the same meal for me, especially in the morning, can have widely different effects on my readings. Simple bacon and egg can cause a postprandial reading ranging from a drop of 1 mmol to a rise of 4.6 mmol! I looked back at my data and noticed the...

    Bikman fans

Thanks for posting @Indy51 that is a very interesting video. It succinctly sums up all the crucial information regarding low carb, hyperinsulinemia and blood glucose. I also found the white/brown fat discussion intriguing. Must get some more brown fat! @Em16 don't give up on the porridge just...

    New X-pert position statement issues

Thanks for the link @HSSS. My favourite snippet was: A 2019 consensus report from the ADA concluded that “a variety of eating patterns are acceptable for the management of diabetes” supporting the need to individualise approaches112. In relation to carbohydrate restriction specifically, this...

    Metformin withdrawal symptoms

Hi @Barrowbakers I had a similar experience a few years ago when I reduced metformin (standard version) from 2 to 1 500mg tablet per day. A very flatulent week or so followed! It then settled down & have had no side effects since. Hopefully you will be free of the gastric woes in a few days.

I’m impatient.... Your experience early mornings?

Hi Estragon, I've been diagnosed 6 years now with a HBA1c of 45 or less for the last 5 years. LCHF for about 3 years. My fasting readings are still all over the place, It can range from 5.1 to 8.5 for no discernable reason and I have tried everything I can think of to lower it but my body is...

    Carb tolerance morning vs evening

Hello everybody, I've been testing a lot over the past couple of months in a bid to get my morning BGs lower. I have found that if I have the same meal for breakfast and dinner it has a huge difference in the BG post-prandial rise. For example 3 x 50% meat sausages will cause a rise of 3.8 mmol...

    Surgery or live with it

Hi Orson, I've had two inguinal hernia mesh repairs, one on each side. The first, in 1993 when I wasn't diabetic, was eight weeks between seeing the GP and getting the op. The second, last year, it was eight months until the operation. This was even though at the pre-op assessment after 2 months...

    Breakfast.....cereals

Hello @lovinglife and thanks for your concern. I thought I would explain my self-testing routine to clarify. January 2013 after my official diagnosis I tested for 5 weeks - fasting, pre and post prandial and bedtime. This taught me a lot, not least of which was that I don't like testing much:) I...

    Breakfast.....cereals

For breakfast I have porage, berries, a splash of normal milk and a sprinkling of cinnamon. I have had this for the last five and a half years, testing once a year during that time and the result is always the same - a rise of 1.5 mmol after 2 hours and down to 4/5 by lunchtime (5 hours later)...

Had a heart attack? What symptoms did you have?

When I had a heart attack 5 years ago the only symptom was mild indigestion and not feeling quite right. No pain at all. After the angioplasty (and 3 stents) I had another attack caused by bleeding around one of the stents. This time the symptoms were classic - acute chest pain and laboured...

    Breakfast

Same every day for me - old fashioned porage oats, handful of assorted berries, splash of milk and then sprinkle cinnamon on top. 32g carbs and keeps me full for up to six hours. Never get tired of it!

    Angiogram anyone?

I don't know if this is the case in all hospitals but when I went in as a day case last November (for a hernia repair) after the op they offered me a ham salad before I went home. Surprisingly it was delicious (and fresh!). Good luck for your procedure.
